Relay for Life kickoff Jan. 24

CHICKASHA — This year’s Relay for Life Chickasha is encouraging participants to think big.

The theme is Hope Big, Dream Big, Relay Big and Party Big at the Relay for Life Kick-off event at 6 p.m., Jan. 24 at Bible Baptist Church in Chickasha.

At the kick-off, participants can register and start or join a team and learn more about Relay for Life.

The kickoff will take place just before Superbowl Sunday. Chicken strips, chips and salsa and other Superbowl snacks will be served at the event.

Since its inception, Relay for Life Chickasha has raised one million dollars, Jeannette Loutsch, Associate Professor of Biology and Relay for Life Chickasha committee member said. Relay for Life Chickasha’s goal this year is to become a Five Star Relay, Loutsch said.

Loutsch said that she would like to see more luminarias this year. Luminarias are the lights placed inside paper sacks which are displayed during the relay. More details to come.

There are two events already planned. One is the Sweetheart Breakfast at 9 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Bible Baptist Church. The event is for cancer survivors. Cancer survivors can give their contact information at the Jan. 24 kickoff to be involved. The pink basketball games will take place on Feb. 7 at USAO.

According to their American Cancer Society events web site, Relay for Life Chickasha already has 21 participants and has raised $135.

This year’s Relay for Life Chickasha will take place at the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma oval from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on June 7-8.
