Club Notes: January 28, 2010

Reported by Pat King.

Springcreek OHCE members met in the home of new member Carol Gray with Ruby Hurley as co-hostess. New officers were installed after the minutes were read. They are President Sharon Courtney, Vice President Nanka Burris, Secretary Judy Courtney, Reporters Sandra Grodecki and Pat King and Statistician Dorothy Clowdus.

Judy Courtney gave the lesson on Quick and Easy Cold Weather Foods and she discussed the nutritional value of food groups and the importance of getting enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Members answered roll call with their favorite quick and easy cold weather dish.

A eulogy for deceased member Madeline Heatley was read by Pat King for members who were unable to attend the December Awards Luncheon.

The song “You Are My Sunshine” was led by Judy and Sharon Courtney and sung by the group. The flag salute was led by Pat King. New Vice President Nanka Burris assigned Educational Committee and Special Activity Committee chairmen and members.

The projects were discussed for the year and they are as follows: Two Christmas food baskets with gift cards, $100 educational scholarships for graduating seniors who meet the group’s criteria, donate at least one nonperishable food item per month per member to the food bank, donations to different charities each year, donating socks and underwear, as well as gloves and mittens to Head Start, donating toiletries to local nursing homes as well as to military personnel.

Our newest project this year is to sponsor two children on the Food for Kids program which is only $200 per child. This program sends food home with a child for the weekend and other times when school is not in session and the child might not be able to get a nourishing meal.

Each February, Springcreek goes on a trip together to someplace in Oklahoma. The trip is planned by the Social Committee Chairman Pat King and committee members Dorothy Clowdus and Mary Jessen. The group will leave at 8 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 from the extension office, traveling north and making a rather large loop before returning home that same day. This is a mystery trip, location undisclosed.

Refreshments were served by the hostesses and members got their serving of veggies for the day, along with some cake.

The club rules were read by outgoing President Ann Smith and the meeting was adjourned. The February meeting will be on the road as mentioned.
