Area OHCE groups hold November meetings
Meridian/Happy Home
The Meridian/Happy Home HCE met Thursday, Nov. 7 at the OSU Extension meeting room for their November meeting. Majorie Nicholas opened the meeting by reading “A Halloween Story.” Shirley Easterling led the flag salute and five members answered roll call with “Name a holiday shopping tip.” the minutes of the October meeting were read and Mabel Phariss gave the financial report. Mary Spurlin gave the lesson on “Tips for Holiday shopping on Line.” She suggested some reliable shopping sites and gave tips on how to protect your credit and identity when shopping on line.
Committee Reports: Membership/ Public Relations: All reports published. Mabel Phariss volunteered 20 hours at the local hospital and books, clothing, and food items had been donated from the club.
Resource Management: 728 pounds of newspapers and magazines had been recycled plus cans, plastic and cardboard. Twenty-two dozen canning jars were recycled to other canners using “Melba’s Workshop” as a contract.
Cultural Enrichment: 11 books and several magazines had been read.
Healthy Living: All members had received their flue shots. Shirley Easterling reviewed the County Healthy Living newsletter which gave several suggestions on stress management to help us through the holiday season. Majorie Nicholas also gave some safety tips for this time of year. Be sure to check batteries in carbon monoxide and fire detectors. Check furnace filters and have heating systems checked and also in this holiday season be careful with using candles.
Cultural arts Show: Final plans were made for the show on Nov. 14-15. We will feature pies, cakes, sweet breads, candies and some small crafts.
“Thank You” notes from our scholarship students were read, a donation to the local Food Pantry was given, Patsy Tapp reminded every one of the annual HCE Awards luncheon on Dec. 8 and plans were made for our December meeting.
The next meeting will be on Dec. 4 at 10 a.m. at the OSU office and it will be our annual Christmas party.
Ninnekah
The Ninnekah OHCE group met at the home of President Shirley Burns. Roll call was answered to “How many apples a day do you eat?” by seven members.
Jessie Bennett gave a devotional to the group. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The financial report was given and approved. Kathy Stidhom’s thank you to all the members for working at the County Fair was read.
Barbara (Max) Thomas read the county health newsletter which stressed the importance of washing one’s hands often during cold and flu season; also washing fresh fruits and vegetables before eating.
Shirley presented the lesson “An Apple a Day”, talked about the recipes that were prepared and sampled at the leader lesson, and distributed materials and recipes to the club members.
The group reported reading 116 books.
Various business was discussed concerning the upcoming Bake and Garage Sale for scholarships on the weekend.
A delicious luncheon of homemade soup and several complimenting dishes, including one from the lesson, were served by hostess Shirley.
The group set up the Garage Sale for the weekend after lunch.
Lucile-Bluebonnet
Lucile-Bluebonnet HCE met at the Extension Center for the November meeting with Nina Boyd as hostess. The meeting was called to order by President Myrtle Elston. For the devotional she read “Lord, Give Me Space”, “Pennies from Heaven” and “Take Time.” The pledge to the flag was lead by Patsy Linn. Roll call was answered by 10 members and one guest with “Tips for Holiday Shopping on Line”. Alice Terry gave the treasurer report. The lesson on “Online Holiday Shopping” was discussed. 10 members and one guest attended the Fall Council Meeting.
Plans were finalized for the Craft Show Nov. 14-15. Some members will be registering guests. We will donate two door prizes. A “Thank You” note was received from Shelly Ast, our scholarship recipient.
Committee reports: Membership- Recruiting of new members continues. Donna Standridge made cards for members to give out. Resource Management-Recycling of a number of items continues. Ten members participated in October. Family- Three birthdays, four reunions and one funeral attended. Healthy Living- A letter was read from the Holiday Living Committed. An article was read about the highly infectious germ “C.Diff”. Two dental appointments, one doctor appointment, and six flu shots. Cultural Enrichment-A Chech Festival attended, seven books were read. Leadership- There will be a conference in Lawton. Military- A large number of coupons collected for use by military families.
The Annual Awards Meeting will be Dec. 10. The meeting adjourned and delicious refreshments were served by hostess Nina Boyd to members and staff. The Dec. 2 meeting will be our annual Christmas luncheon and party in the home of Alice Terry at 11:30 a.m.

Country music's Gene Watson plans Oct. 9 show in Chickasha
Gene Watson, the country music legend with 21 top 10 songs, will return to the Chickasha High School Activity Center for a 7:30 p.m. show Oct. 9.
This will be Watson’s fourth consecutive year to perform at Chickasha High School, having played there every year since the facility opened in 2007. -
Art classes offered at Epworth Methodist
Elizabeth Johnson, local Chickasha artist and teacher, has announced that she will be offering art classes for kids and adults this fall.
All classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 4th and Iowa, Chickasha. -
Butler announces AT&T retirement
After 44 years of service, Jerry Butler has announced his retirement from AT&T
Butler began his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone now AT&T in June of 1966.
His first job assignment was in Alva, Okla., as a Lineman.
In November he transferred to Chickasha where he continued as a Lineman until June of 1970. -

CHS Key Club plans first meeting for Aug. 26
Key Club is the student branch of the Kiwanis organization.

OHCE members take part in state meeting
CHICKASHA, Okla. –Members of Grady County’s Oklahoma Home and Community Education organization met recently in Oklahoma City for the group’s 75th annual state meeting. This year’s theme was “Dreams to Diamonds,” which reflected that the group was observing its 75th birthday.

Ninnekah community set to host summer blood drive
Blood donors will receive two tickets to the Oklahoma City Zoo and a “Feel Wild” T-shirt when they give blood with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) this summer. First Baptist Church is hosting a blood drive 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, August 18 at the High School Cafeteria, 901 S. Maple.

Drawing held, winner named
Glenda Sage of Rush Springs was the lucky winner of a Weatherby shotgun, the prize of a recent fund-raising effort for Miss Audri King, the two-year-old daughter of Brandon and Janae King of Chickasha and granddaughter of Walter and Pat King and Coye and Marla Langford, held at the Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull held recently at the Grady County Fairgrounds in Chickasha.
