Chickasha Public Schools spotlight : Technology

By Ann McCalla

Over the summer of 2009, Chickasha Public Schools implemented PowerSchool. PowerSchool is a completely web-based student information system that enables schools to record, access, report and manage their student data in real-time. PowerSchool will greatly improve our ability to provide information to teachers, parents and administrators and to be able to provide mandated information to the Federal and State government.

Chickasha Schools believes that PowerSchool Student Information System represents the beginning of unprecedented communication between parents, students, teachers and our schools. Parents will have web access to student attendance, current grades, assignment information, daily bulletins, etc… PowerSchool allows parents to be proactive and involved in their child’s education.

Another new program recently implemented is SchoolReach, a telephone broadcasting service designed to help keep our parents better informed about school happenings. This program allows us to contact thousands of households within a short amount of time. While this system can be used to contact parents during emergency situations, its primary use will be for regular announcements - school picture days, parent-teacher conferences, family nights and other upcoming events.

This is a very important service for our district and the families that we serve. Research indicates that parent involvement is one of the most important – if not the most important – indicator of student success. One of the first steps of parent involvement is for the principal and teachers to let parents know what is happening at school.

In the event of a snow day or other school closure or important school or activity announcement, Chickasha School families will receive a phone call through the SchoolReach phone system. We will try to make these calls in the evening between 5P.M. and 8P.M. unless it is an emergency, in which case the SchoolReach call will be made as needed.

If the calls go unanswered, SchoolReach will ring until your answering machine picks up. The message will be left for you to retrieve as you normally would. If you do not have an answering machine, SchoolReach attempts three calls at periodic intervals.

Parents will be receiving more information about these programs from their child’s school. This is a very exciting time for us all!
