Diamonds in the Rough

Mentoring event planned by CPS

— The Chickasha Public School Foundation award-winning mentoring luncheon event, “DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH,” for all Chickasha Public Schools fifth grade girls has been scheduled for Thursday,  Feb. 2nd, 2012.  It will once again be at USAO Ballroom from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (School students eat early!) Rita Aragon, Major General (retired) Oklahoma Air National Guard and Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the State of Oklahoma, will speak to the girls about careers, goals and vision; and etiquette expert, Carey Sue Vega will speak to the students regarding etiquette and manners.  Girls Scouts and Jay’s Jewelry has partnered with us once again for this program.  A big thank you to Julie Bohannon of Girl Scouts and  Kristy and Jason Jarnagin, Jay’s Jewelry!

We are asking women in the community to be mentors for the luncheon.  The duties and responsibilities of the mentors 1) arrive at 10:00 a.m. and attend the luncheon that day, introduce yourself to the young ladies at your table and carry on a discussion about your goals, vision, careers, let them discuss theirs, if any, and learn their name 2) send them a follow up note of encouragement and how nice it was to meet them (we can send them in school mail) and 3) if you aren’t already a member of the foundation, become a member.  Membership is any donation amount with a minimum gift of $25.00.

Fifth grade is such an awkward age (thus the title, Diamonds in the Rough) and we have an opportunity to show students they have choices and should dream big.  Their futures are brighter with support from our community.  We need 40 women in the community to participate to facilitate a 2:1 ratio of students to mentors.
