CVTC names 19 to inaugural adult leadership class
CHICKASHA, OK (Dec. 10, 2009) ? For more than five years, Canadian Valley Technology Center's Chickasha campus has offered the Student Ambassador Leadership program to high school students and recent graduates. While a great opportunity for traditional-aged students, nearly half of CVTC's student body didn't have the chance to participate in the leadership group.
This year, however, that has changed thanks to the creation of Leadership CVTC, an adults-only leadership class focusing on community service, networking and career readiness.
Under the direction of Angie Lewis, Business & Industry Services Director, along with Dick Lowe, Industrial Coordinator; Kelly Arnold, Communications & Marketing Director; and Erica Miller, Communications & Marketing Specialist, the students in Leadership CVTC have the unique opportunity to meet and hear from community leaders on various topics.
"Leadership CVTC has created a unique opportunity for adult students to learn more about citizenship and service opportunities in our local communities. These students will gain a greater understanding of their role as the backbone of our area. Together they have the stick-to- it-ive-ness and the call to service that is needed to make this area thrive," Lewis said. "They are the future, and have the roots and relatives here that will outlast any economic disaster."
Speakers from the community will present on select program topics each month. "Having people from the community come in is not only an opportunity for the students to learn about current issues facing our area, but also to meet these leaders face-to-face, and possibly make a connection that will help them somewhere down the road," Lewis added.
Monthly meeting topics will include: Personality and Leadership Styles; Rural Health Issues; Cultural Diversity; Economic and Community Development; Youth and Education; Local Government; and State Government, which will include a trip to the state capitol.
In order to be named to the leadership group, students had to first complete a process which included application, instructor nomination form and interview.
"This program requires a person who is responsible, resourceful, and perhaps most important, self-motivated," Lewis said. "So far, I am quite pleased with the students we have selected."
