Experience Works, the nation's largest organization serving older workers through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), is celebrating National Older Americans Month throughout Oklahoma by showing appreciation for older adults and the value they bring to communities across the state.
This year's theme‚"Never Too Old to Play!‚" puts a spotlight on the important role older adults have in sharing their experience, wisdom, and understanding and passing them on to other generations in a variety of ways. The Experience Works SCSEP serves low-income older people who need help transitioning to the workforce and provides a wide range of intergenerational community service opportunities. Across Oklahoma, older individuals in the SCSEP are assigned to childcare centers, schools, recreational clubs, libraries and other service agencies where they provide other vital services to the community.
Karen Coven, Participant Assistant assists Grady and McLain county older workers with training and employment. She helps the workers determine what job skills need to be updated and then places them in a community service training site. "Experience Works SCSEP provides older Americans an opportunity to learn new job skills while giving back to the community," says Vickie Kinsey, Oklahoma state director for Experience Works.
People over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, the workforce, faith-based organizations, and social networking. Experience Works SCSEP serves low-income individuals 55 and older who need a steppingstone to a job through community service and training. Karen Coven is at the Workforce Office in Chickasha.
