CHICKASHA —
On display in the main gallery of the Grady County Museum is the “farm cart”. The cart belonged to Leon and Alice Seebeck, who farmed near Verden for fifty-one years. A gift from Donna A. Hill, Gary Seebeck, and Karen Seebeck, relatives of the owners’, the cart was used on the Seebeck farm for many years.
The hand cart was designed so that one person could easily move supplies. The cart has a removable front panel to aid in removing the load and a hinged back panel. Tall metal wheels that have two rows of spokes on the axel support the cart.
The cart was used on the farm to move milk and cream to and from the “milk house”. After passing through a cream separator, the cream was sold for butter making. Also, the milk and cream were used for the farm household. One of the milk cans from the farm came with the cart and may be found in the cart.
Photographed with the cart is Brenda Bickerstaff, niece of Mrs. Seebeck. She remembers pushing the cart to move chicken feed, as well as the milk products.
The red painted wood cart is part of the Barn Exhibit. Other farm related items have been place in the cart. Visitors may see a nail keg filled with carpentry tools and horse livery items, a cream can, and a wooden burrow saddle frame. Just for the young children who visit, there is a chicken nest with a hen and baby chicks.
Visit the Grady County Museum at 415 W. Chickasha Avenue, Chickasha, OK to view the cart and the remainder of the bridal displays before the bridal items are put away for awhile. The Museum is open M-F from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For additional information or to schedule group tours contact 405-224-6480 or gchistorical@att.net.
Also, the annual yearly summer vacation for the Grady County Museum and the Crazy 8 Café will be the last week in July this year. The Museum and restaurant will be closed for vacations and maintenance from July 25-29, 2011. Other businesses in the building will be open during that week.
