'Knightmares' for Northwest

Chicks knockout Classen, 54-0, for big homecoming victory

CHICKASHA —

Within two plays , the Fightin' Chicks were up by two touchdowns thanks to the work of the defense and that set the stage for the onslaught in a 54-0 romp over Northwest Claseen Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

After pinning NW Classen on the 1-yard line of the opening kickoff, the Knights' Christian Gorham handed off to a running back who initially was getting tackled in the end zone, looking like the Chicks (2-4 overall, 1-2 in District 5A-2) would get a safety. But he fumbled in the process and Orin Stevenson recovered a for a TD to make it 7-0.

NW Classen recovered an onside kick and recovered at the Knights 38. Chase Rodgers hit Devrick Gray wide open in the end zone for a 24-yard strike and it was 21-0. Rodgers threw for 168 yards but compoleted 78 percent of his passes (7-of-9 attempts).

"Our defense played outsanding," Chickasha coach Rick VanCleave said. "Probably should have been a close game than what it was. But after our defense jumped up on them 14-0, they just laid down a little bit."

The Chicks' defense didn't allow much room for NW Classen to move and forced three times on one possession.

The Knights could poduce only 57 yards of total offense.

Ine loose ball recovred by Colin Hightower set up a 54-yard TD from Riodgers to Zack Funderburk, mmaking it 28-0 with 5:50 left in the opening period.

The Chicks' got a pair of rushing TDs from Rodgers (five) and Drake Morris (three) to make it 41-0 at halftime.

The Knights did not start moving the ball until late in the second quarter. By that time, second teamers were coming in for Chickasha.

Morris added a 30-yard TD in thethird quarter and Rashad Garrett scored from 60 yards ona lateral from Jacobi Davis.
