If you’re looking for something to do to celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, there are a variety of activities planned around Grady County.
The annual Chickasha Freedom Festival Fireworks Display will erupt at dusk Saturday evening from Shannon Springs Park.
This year’s presentation by Western Enterprises costs about $13,800 and will be similar in duration to last year’s show.
Organizer John Mosley said new federal regulations will require that the fireworks be fired from the Shannon Springs dam this year.
“Firing from the dam allows you to use a smaller shell,” Mosley said. “It won’t go as high but there will be just as many as last year.”
Fire Chief Greg Gibson said the Chickasha Fire Department will be on hand nearby to ensure the show goes off safely.
Sponsors include Mosley Agency/Century 21 Mosley, First National Bank, Chickasha Bank, Charles Allen Ford, The Express-Star, Dunn’s, Eduardo’s, A&E; Grill, Jeroco, John Holt Auto Group, Kool 105.5, LaForge Properties, Ouachita Exploration and Standley Systems.
Traditionally, the Chickasha Arts Council has sponsored pre-fireworks entertainment and activities in the park but will not being doing so this year. A spokesperson said the Arts Council is focusing its attention on a big arts festival this fall downtown.
The Independence Day forecast calls for it to be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 100. During the evening, clouds are expected to move into central Oklahoma and the chance of rain increases to 30 percent.
