Local charity asks for help to aid kids

CHICKASHA — With its Christmas Angel Tree gift distribution only a few days away, the Salvation Army of Grady County is still short donations needed to fulfill the holiday wishes for more than 100 children in need.

Christmas Angel Tree donation stations are scattered throughout town in locations like Walmart and Atwoods, among others.

"We have some in Chickasha and some in Anadarko," said Misty Robinson, a Salvation Army employee. "The deadline is Friday and we still have a hundred or so angels left to help."

Every day, according to Robinson, the Salvation Army goes around to all the Grady County Angel Trees and refills them with new angel tags, filled out by children who may otherwise not receive any Christmas gifts. Even if an angel isn't picked off one of the trees, the child won't have to go empty handed this Christmas season.

"At that point," Robinson explained, "The Salvation Army steps in for that child."

Children 12 and under who are in financial need filled out Angel Tree cards. One angel card hanging on one of the Walmart Angel Trees was filled out by 6-year-old Marale. The card has size information regarding sleepwear, shoes, coat and sweater size. At the bottom of the card Marale wrote he wants a bike, skates or anything Spiderman.

Another angel card hanging on an Angel Tree in town was filled out by 9-year-old Kaytlyn. She also filled out all her clothing sizes, along with her dream of receiving a MP3 player or jewelry for Christmas this year.

Like Marale and Kaytlyn, hundreds of Grady County children need help. To help the Salvation Army with their Angel Tree gift drive, go to any participating Angel Tree locations, take the angel tag off the tree and purchase as many items on the angel as possible. Bring the items back to the location of the tree or the Salvation Army located at 227 North 4th St. in Chickasha. All donations are due by Friday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m.
