Early voting turnout heavy for primary

The first day of the early voting period for Tuesday’s primary election brought in several voters more compared to past years regardless of the triple digit heat.

By mid-afternoon, about 150 voters had already cast their ballots.

Secretary for the Grady County Election Board Susan Turner said, “It’s only three o’clock on the first day and we have already received more votes than received in two days on other elections. This is a great thing and we hope that it continues.”

Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for regular voting in the primary. You can cast your vote early at the election board offices through Monday.

There are approximately 28,000 registered voters eligible to vote in Grady County, Turner said.

Turner said, “We are set up to accommodate the Grady County voters and would like to encourage everyone to come out and vote. If anybody has any questions or needs special assistance of any kind I ask that they do not hesitate in calling...That’s what we’re here for.”

When asked if the high temperatures would affect the voter turn out, Turner replied, “It very possibly could. Sometimes lines form outside and I can see elderly voters being affected.”

“However, if anyone needs assistance or felt like they can’t wait in line because of the heat, they can come inside and we will assist them. The last thing I would want is someone that want to vote to be discouraged for any reason.”
