Chickasha renews deal with DOC

Emily Lawson

The Chickasha City Council has unanimously voted to renew is contract with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

This contract allows for the utilization of correction inmates in certain labor positions around the town.

The idea is not to replace full-time employees, but to place the inmates in additional positions of weed eating and mowing. These individuals are nonviolent offenders nearing the end of their sentence so they can work in any part of the city that they staff needs. They will also be used to work in sanitation and water maintenance when employees are sick or on workers compensation. Approximately 20 prisoners a day will be used.

In addition to renewing the contract, the council awarded the bid of General Liability, fleet, and property insurance, Health Re-insurance, PPO services, and bunker gear for the fire department.

The council also voted a unanimous yes to amending the sign ordinance, which includes limiting temporary signs to four signs a year.
