The Chickasha School Board at Thursday’s special meeting appointed former board member Joe Alford to serve the remainder of John Gentry’s term.
Gentry, who was board president, recently resigned.
The board voted unanimously to make the appointment, allowing Alford to serve the remaining few weeks of Gentry’s five-year tierm
“I hope to be able to contribute to improving the education of the children in Chickasha,” Alford said.
He said he was undecided about filing in December to run for a full term in the February school election but remains “open to the idea.”
Alford is a 20-year staff attorney at Fort Sill Army Base, father of two Chickasha graduates, husband to the honorable Oteka Alford, and former board member, having served from 1999 through 2004.
There were two other key points to last night’s meeting, the first being a roofing project bid. It was awarded to Heritage Roofing for the lowest qualifying bid of 1,071,870.00, beating out the other two bidders Crawford Roofing and Haney Roofing.
“We received really good bids on this project and all of the bids were competitive,” said Superintendent of Transportation and Maintenance Pete Bush.
The second item, which was originally listed as agenda items 11 trough 17, was struck from the meeting after Superintendent Jim Glaze said that the district had received a resignation letter from employee Luke Johnson.
The former bus driver was arrested recently for having a gun in his vehicle on school property.
