Ninnekah OHCE
sets bake sale
The Ninnekah OHCE will be holding a bake sale on Friday May 8th in the Petroleum Building in downtown Chickasha. Each year the Ninnekah OHCE donates scholarships to graduating seniors or returning adult students. This event is always held during OHCE week, which is intended to highlight the many community activities that OHCE members are involved with. Last year the Ninnekah OHCE donated $1,000.00 in scholarship money. Among the many items that will be available will be Ninnekah’s famous cinnamon rolls, chocolate and coconut cream pies, carrot cake, Italian Cream cake, sweet breads, yeast breads, cookies, and much more. This will be a perfect opportunity to purchase your special Mother’s Day items. The bake sale will be from 9:00 to 4:00 at 401 W. P.E.O. Chapter FV meets May 4
Members of P.E.O. Chapter FV will meet Mon., May 4, 2009 in the home of Lynn Heck. Members are reminded to bring their favorite foods and recipes to share at FV’s traditional spring supper, which begins at 6 pm. The business meeting is to follow at 7 pm. Co-hostess is Bobi Elliott. Jan Storms, Chapter FV President, will present the program ‘Sharing the Light from State Convention’. Marguerites will not be revealed at this meeting, but at a meeting in the fall.
Vidalia onion sale benefits Shriners
The India Shrine Center is having its annual vidalia onion sale again this year. Carey Wilkerson is taking orders at 224-6230. The cost is $10 for a 10-pound bag. The arrival date is April 28, with delivery as soon as possible. Proceeds benefit the Shriner’s transportation fund.
Marantha Baptist selling tacos
Marantha Baptist Church, located at 1505 S. 29th Street in Chickasha, will be having an indian taco sale to benefit the youth for church camp on May 2. The sale opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m. Tacos are $6 each with dessert and tea. Serving will start at 10 a.m. Delivery is available with-in city limits. Call 224-1756. Dine in or carry out.
OHCE Week set for May 4-10
Oklahoma Home and Community Education of Grady County will host an event celebrating OHCE Week, May 4-10. The event will take place at the Community Building at the Grady County Fairgrounds on Monday, May 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A representative from Grady County Department of Human Services will speak to the group about the needs of Grady County’s limited resources for families and the elderly. The public is welcome to attend.
Comanche HS hosting tourney
The Comanche High School Fast Pitch team will be holding a weekend tournament for T-ball and U8 and U10 machine pitch softball teams to raise money for a tournament trip to Colorado. The four-game guarantee “Mother’s Day Bash” will be held from Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10. Entry fees are $75 for T-ball teams and $100 for the machine pitch teams. fast-pitch tourney
The 4th annual Kiwanis Founder Day Fast-Pitch Softball tournament will be played Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9 at Lindsay’s Griffith Sports Complex. Classes will be 8U, machine pitch, 12U and Class C. There will be a $125 entree. There will be a four-game guarantee. Each team must bring two game balls. Pocasset Lodge
hosts fundraiser
There will be an area volunteer fire department fundraiser dinner sponsored by the Pocasset Masonic Lodge on Sunday, May 3 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Minco Fire Department located at 107 N.W. 3rd St. in Minco. There is no charge for the meal which includes pulled pork barbecue with all the trimmings and desserts made by the wives of the volunteer firemen. Excess desserts will be auctioned off at various times throughout the day. All monies received will be distributed among the Minco, Cogar, Harold and Pocasset fire departments. Cash donations will be accepted at the door.

sets fundraiser
The Pioneer Fire Departmemnt will hold its annual fundraiser featuring chopped barbecue brisket sandwiches and a bake sale on Saturday, May 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pioneer School. Proceeds will go to help outfit the recently-purchased brush rig.
CMS promotion
set for May 22
The Chickasha Middle School 8th Grade Promotional Ceremony will take place in the CMS Auditorium at 1000 South 9th st. on May 22 at 1:p.m. Promotion photos will be available for purchase the day of the ceremony. Parents of 8th graders are invited to attend!

takes food orders
Angel Food orders will be taken at the Ninnekah First Baptist Church Tuesday, April 28 through Friday, May1 and Tuesday, May 5 through Friday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. The last day to order is Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Food will be distributed on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Some of the May specials available include May Special number one, a six-pound meat assortment consisting of bone-in strip steaks, thick-cut pork chops, bacon-wrapped beef patties and Bratwurst with cheese for $22; May Special number two, featuring eight eight-ounce sirloin strip steaks; and May Special number three which includes two pounds of steak fajita strips, chicken breast fajita strips, onions, bell peppers and flour tortillas for $21. Duncan nips Chicks for straight-game win
Duncan got their eighth match win of the season Tuesday, beating Nancy Waters’ Lady Chicks in straight games at the Activity Center.
The Chicks looked like they had a little hangover from Monday night’s tough road loss at Tecumseh, coming out flat again and dropping their first two games by identical 25-17 scores.
They came out firing on all eight cylinders for game three, running out to a 15-9 lead on the strength of a 7-0 run with Shelby Crosley serving, but the Demons battled back to tie it late and the Chicks let it slip away, 25-21. -

NORMAN (AP) — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has named walk-on Patrick O'Hara as the starting place-kicker for the seventh-ranked Sooners.
Stoops said on his radio show Tuesday night that O'Hara won the competition with Jimmy Stevens, freshman Michael Hunnicutt and redshirt freshman Bryce Easley. -
OSU's Gundy still learning on job
STILLWATER (AP) — Mike Gundy hasn't lost his love for dialing up the right play to keep Oklahoma State's offense purring along.
That passion, which he has called the most enjoyable part of his job as head coach, was bred into him as an offensive coordinator. And he is a former starting quarterback for the Cowboys. -
Whimsical metal work, jewelry part of big art show at USAO
A showing of whimsical metal work and jewelry is scheduled to be on display at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma during Helen’s Show Sept. 10-Oct 1.
The show will feature the work of USAO graduate Helen Shafer. The exhibition will be open daily during normal business hours in the Davis Hall Third Floor Art Gallery on the USAO campus. The show is free and open to the public. An opening reception is scheduled Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in the gallery. -
High-speed chase lands 1 in jail
A high-speed motorcycle chase down Highway 81 last Wednesday landed a Ninnekah man in jail and a felony charge of eluding a police officer.
Court records show that James William Hutchins, 21, blew by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Timothy Parrish at U.S. Highway 81 and County Road 1460 and was clocked going 144 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone.
Parrish reported that he was sitting stationary at that location at about 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 25 when he observed a red motorcycle traveling southbound. He engaged his emergency lights and siren and pulled onto the roadway behind the Triumph motorcycle. -
5 inmates denied parole
Parole was recently denied for five Grady County inmates serving sentences with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
The following individuals were denied at the August Pardon and Parole Board meeting:
• Jeremiah Daniel Cline, who is serving a five-year sentence for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance and a five-year sentence for possession of a controlled dangerous substance, began his sentence in August 2008.
• Warren P. Diego, who is serving a 15-year sentence (10 years PTS) for lewd molestation, began his sentence in February 2009. -
Judge recuses herself from pharmacy case
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state district judge has stepped aside from the first-degree murder trial of a pharmacist accused in the fatal shooting of an unconscious would-be robber.
