Survivor dinner set for June 2
It’s that time of year again that we celebrate our survivors. Your Chickasha Relay For Life Committee is hosting a pot luck dinner for all survivors on June 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bible Baptist Church on 29th street. It promises to be a time of good food and fellowship complete with entertainment.

Wrestling camp
set for June 8-12
Chad Randle’s 15th annual Chickasha Wrestling Camp is set for June 8-12 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Guest clinician wi9ll be Oklahoma University assistant coach Michael Lightner, four-time high school state champion, 4-time All-American and National Champion. Age ages are welcome. The fee is $50 and includes a camp t-shirt. The camp will be held at the wrestling complex just north of the football stadium. For more information, call Coach Randle at 410-9700.
GED graduation
set for June 4
The 14th annual commencent ceremony sponsored by the Chickasha Adult Learning Center and the Altusa Club for recipients of GED diplomas will be Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at the Chickasha High School Activity Center. Each candidate that successfully completed the GED examination during the past year is invited to participate. You are also encouraged to bring all of your family and friend to help you celebrate this special occasion. Altrusa Club will host a reception following the ceremony. All graduates will need to be in the lobby by 6:45 p.m. Call 222-6562 to reserve your seat for the graduation ceremony.
Line Dance
lessons offered
Free line dance lessons are being offered at Best Western Inn in Chickasha, 2101 S. 4th St., across the street from McDonalds. Classes are held on the first and third Monday of every month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the banquet room. Beginners and all ages are welcome. Door prizes and refreshments are served. to meet
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Group, parents, caregivers and teachers, will meet the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., facilitated by Options Counseling Service, Inc., 420 W. Country Club Rd., Suite Two, 405-222-3018. Thanks to the generosity of Kelly Nunn, there is no fee for this group. No childcare is available.
Juneteenth
celebration set
Juneteenth or June 19, celebrated the third week in June, is the oldest known celebration since President Lincoln issued a proclamation ending slavery in 1862. This year, Juneteenth will host its Celebration on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13. The celebration kicks off Friday evening with a jazz cool-down session. At $2 per plate, you can taste and help select winners of the "Bake-Off" and "Cook-Off" delightful delicacies. Saturday morning, the festivities begin with a parade, opening ceremony, spiritual activities, free foods and lots of family fun. Donations or Contributions can be sent to Juneteenth Celebration in care of President James Dorn at P.O. Box 211 - Chickasha, OK 73023. $25 will reserve your booth space. Memorial service
to be held May 25
The Oklahoma Veteran’s Recognition Committee will present a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25 at the Veteran’s Memorial in the Chickasha Shannon Park. Please attend and show your support for all veteran’s both past and military presently serving.
Swimming camps
are scheduled
There will be a summer swimming camp at the USAO pool from June 1-4 from 12:15 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. for students Kindergarten through third grade. The cost is $35. A second session from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. will be added if needed. There will be another camp from June 22-25 from 12:15 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. for students in grades four and above. USAO offers
swim lessons
USAO summer swim lessons for children are scheduled June 1-12, 15-26, June 29-July 10, and July 13-24 from 10-11 a.m. Monday-Friday. Enrollment is scheduled May 28 and 29 from 10 a.m.-noon in the USAO Fieldhouse, 20th and Utah. The two-week classes are $45. Children must be three and a half feet tall in order to stand in the shallow end of the pool. Contact Dr. Nancy Osborn at 574-1246 for more information.
Diabetes support
group to meet
The Grady Memorial Hospital Diabetes Information-Support group will meet Thursday, May 21, in the first floor conference room from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Support Group, a service of Grady Memorial Hospital, is free to anyone in the community who is interested in learning more about diabetes and learning to live with diabetes. If you or someone you know is struggling with diabetes or have questions about diabetes, plan on attending. Thursday’s topic is “Supermarket Savvy – Getting More Nutrition for Less Money,” by Cindy Wilcox, RD, LD. Call the Diabetes Center, 405-779-2130 for more information.
Bray-Doyle to
hold golf scramble
The Bray-Doyle basketball program will be holding a two-man golf scramble at Duncan’s Twin Oaks Golf Course on Saturday, June 20 to raise funds for equipment. Golfers may register as teams or individually to be placed in a group. The entry fee is $60. Cash prizes, trophies, door prizes and lunch are included. Art at the Rock fundraiser June 20
The Rock Island Arts Festival sponsorship committee is currently planning the “Art at the Rock” Fundraiser Event, Saturday June 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Leman and Louise Spoon residence giving guided tours of this amazing home. Harpist Jessica Tate will convey musical emotions with her golden strings while guests enjoy a lineup of Hors d’oeuvres. Duncan nips Chicks for straight-game win
Duncan got their eighth match win of the season Tuesday, beating Nancy Waters’ Lady Chicks in straight games at the Activity Center.
The Chicks looked like they had a little hangover from Monday night’s tough road loss at Tecumseh, coming out flat again and dropping their first two games by identical 25-17 scores.
They came out firing on all eight cylinders for game three, running out to a 15-9 lead on the strength of a 7-0 run with Shelby Crosley serving, but the Demons battled back to tie it late and the Chicks let it slip away, 25-21. -

NORMAN (AP) — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has named walk-on Patrick O'Hara as the starting place-kicker for the seventh-ranked Sooners.
Stoops said on his radio show Tuesday night that O'Hara won the competition with Jimmy Stevens, freshman Michael Hunnicutt and redshirt freshman Bryce Easley. -
OSU's Gundy still learning on job
STILLWATER (AP) — Mike Gundy hasn't lost his love for dialing up the right play to keep Oklahoma State's offense purring along.
That passion, which he has called the most enjoyable part of his job as head coach, was bred into him as an offensive coordinator. And he is a former starting quarterback for the Cowboys. -
Whimsical metal work, jewelry part of big art show at USAO
A showing of whimsical metal work and jewelry is scheduled to be on display at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma during Helen’s Show Sept. 10-Oct 1.
The show will feature the work of USAO graduate Helen Shafer. The exhibition will be open daily during normal business hours in the Davis Hall Third Floor Art Gallery on the USAO campus. The show is free and open to the public. An opening reception is scheduled Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in the gallery. -
High-speed chase lands 1 in jail
A high-speed motorcycle chase down Highway 81 last Wednesday landed a Ninnekah man in jail and a felony charge of eluding a police officer.
Court records show that James William Hutchins, 21, blew by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Timothy Parrish at U.S. Highway 81 and County Road 1460 and was clocked going 144 miles per hour in a posted 70 miles per hour zone.
Parrish reported that he was sitting stationary at that location at about 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 25 when he observed a red motorcycle traveling southbound. He engaged his emergency lights and siren and pulled onto the roadway behind the Triumph motorcycle. -
5 inmates denied parole
Parole was recently denied for five Grady County inmates serving sentences with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.
The following individuals were denied at the August Pardon and Parole Board meeting:
• Jeremiah Daniel Cline, who is serving a five-year sentence for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance and a five-year sentence for possession of a controlled dangerous substance, began his sentence in August 2008.
• Warren P. Diego, who is serving a 15-year sentence (10 years PTS) for lewd molestation, began his sentence in February 2009. -
Judge recuses herself from pharmacy case
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state district judge has stepped aside from the first-degree murder trial of a pharmacist accused in the fatal shooting of an unconscious would-be robber.
