Two wrecks send men to hospital
Two separate wrecks sent a 70-year-old man and a truck driver to the hospital on Friday afternoon.
The accidents happened within two hours of each other and both were inside the Chickasha city limits.
Marvin Spears, 70, suffered head trauma in an accident at Choctaw and 4th Street at about 2:15 p.m. Spears remained in his car for 30 or more minutes while paramedics secured his neck and head.
In a separate incident, a truck driver, who police did not identify, clipped the back end of a 2000 Mercury Villager and sent each vehicle flying into opposite ditches.
The truck driver was taken to the hospital, but none of the five people riding in the Villager were injured. This accident occured at about 1:30 p.m. on North Hwy. 81, near the train tracks.
NORTH HWY 81
* How It Happened: Felicia McDaniel of Minco was driving the Villager southbound on Hwy. 81. She was following a motorcycle, and the truck full of water bottles was following her, she said.
The leading motorcycle slowed to cross the train tracks, and McDaniel hit her brakes to avoid crashing into it. That’s when, McDaniel said, the truck driver tried to pull into the left lane and pass her. She said the truck clipped her left rear bumper and sent her flying into the west ditch and itself into the east ditch.
* Who Was There: McDaniel said the driver was the lone passenger in the truck. She was transporting five other people, including four children ages 2 to 11. Her grandmother, Lanoma Wallis, was in the passenger’s seat. Wallis owns the Villager. No one in the Wallis was hurt.
* Oddity: The Wallis family recently broke a taillight on vacation. Lanoma’s husband was in route to find a replacement when the accident happened Friday, she said. ... The truck flipped over and spilled water bottles with “Chickasha Sports Complex” labels all over the side of the road.
CHOCTAW & 4TH
* How It Happened: Wayne Carter of Chickasha was sitting in his Stephens Oil Truck at the stoplight at Choctaw and 4h Street. Pam Adams. also of Chickasha, was sitting second in line, behind Carter, in her black ‘97 GMC pickup.
Witness Everett Buchanan, Jr. said Marvin Spears plowed into the back of Adams’ pickup, causing it to smash into the back of Carter’s oil truck.
* Who Was There: Each automobile had just the single passenger.
* Oddity: “(Spears) never touched the brake,” witness Everett Buchanan, Jr. said. “He was speeding up all the way. He passed (me) at the Dairy Queen and (I) thought he was going to hit (me).” ... “I was stopped, had my seat belt on, and looked in the mirror and saw him coming,” said Carter, driver of the oil truck. “There wasn’t anything I could do but take it.” ... Carter’s truck was practically unharmed. He drove it away from the scene after police concluded investigating. ˚
