Braden & Roxie: A showtime pair stars in the winner’s circle

It’s all in the showmanship for Braden Henricks.

With the gentlest tap of his show stick, the Verden freshman guided his Hereford calf Roxie around the ring Wednesday at the Grady County Junior Livestock Show.

Right into the winner’s circle.

Roxie knew the routine well and instantly responded to every touch, helping Henricks win the Championship Award in Showmanship.

“Keep an eye on the judge, stay calm, be in a happy place and try to do your best,” Henricks advises.

Henricks, 14, a freshman at Verden High School, is the son of Tim and Kari Henricks of Verden.

Showing cows since he was 9 years old, Henricks says it takes a lot of work.

“I learned from my dad how to show cows, he’s been a great inspiration to me,” Henricks said. “I love the experience, it’s a fun thing that I enjoy and like to do.”

Her coat brushed to perfection, Henricks grooms Roxie about every other day.

“She doesn’t mind it and she likes her warm bath when it’s cold outside,” Henricks said.

Henricks and Roxie will move on to compete in the Oklahoma Youth Expo in Oklahoma City during Spring Break.

Participating in the youth expo for the last four years, Henricks has yet to win.

“I’ve never won the showmanship award up there, but I would like to; it’s one of my main goals,” Henricks said.

A family effort, Braden’s older brother Colton Henricks, 18, also shows cows, winning Reserve Champion with his Black Angus calf on Wednesday at the Grady County Fairgrounds.
