Eagle project gives discs flight at park

CHICKASHA —

Early this spring, Tanner Tibbetts, a scout from Troop 4306 in Chickasha began to plan his Eagle Scout Project.  He decided on a Disc Golf Course.

He had seen a disc golf tournament at Duncan Lake while he was attending a camporee.  There were more than a hundred campers who attended the weekend Disc Golf event at Duncan Lake. He continued to see this event for five consecutive years, because it was held on the same weekend as an annual scout camp.

It was surprising to him see so many people involved in an event that was unavailable in Chickasha.

Disc Golf fits into the Scout Oath by providing the means to keep yourself physically strong. Tibbetts feels that a Disc Golf course will provide the citizens of Chickasha with a fun and enjoyable way to interact through exercise and competition.

The Disc Golf Course was built in Shannon Springs Park in partnership with the City Of Chickasha.  All baskets and poles were donated by the City of Chickasha.

Donations for the signage, hardware, concrete, sand, and rock were provided by private individuals, local businesses, friends, and family.

The labor for this course was performed by Troop 4306 of Chickasha and community volunteers.

Special assistance throughout the entire project was given by Chickasha City Planner, Justin LeBeau.  Also important to the project were Mayor Hank Ross, Chickasha City Council members and the Parks Department workers.

There were a total of 148 volunteer man-hours to complete the project. The course is challenging but suitable for the novice as well.  It is a nine-hole course with the shortest hole at 202 feet and the longest hole is 299 feet. All holes are par three.

The course starts on the North side of the Bath House parking lot.  Holes one and two are located on the east side of the park and holes three through nine are placed around the fitness trail north of the dam.  Normal Frisbee style discs will make the course much more difficult to play.

It is recommended to use discs that are designed for the sport. The performance of a competition disc is much greater than that of a common Frisbee. Competition discs are easily available at most sporting goods stores.

Tibbetts is the son of Mark and Kathy Tibbetts of Ninnekah.  He has one brother, Logan.  Tanner is currently a Junior at  The Oklahoma School of Science & Mathematics In Oklahoma City.

He has been in Scouting for over 10 years.   He has worked with the Cub Scout program as a Den Chief to teach scouting to younger scouts for five years.

Tanner is a Brotherhood member of The Order of the Arrow, which is the Honor Society for Scouting.  Tanner just returned from National Boy Scout Jamboree, Ft AP Hill, Virginia.

where he was a part of over 46,000 other scouts that celebrated the 100 year anniversary of The Boy Scouts.

 Of America.

He spent four days touring Philadelphia and Washington DC prior to the ten days at National Jamboree.  His plans are to complete his last remaining Merit Badge and to earn his Eagle Scout Award by the end of this year.

RULES OF DISC GOLF

• Tee throws must be completed within or behind the tee area. Do not throw until the players in front of you are out of range.

• The spot where the previous throw has landed and come to rest is called a lie. All throws after the tee throw are made from the lie. Any disc that comes to rest above the ground is considered an un-playable lie. The disc must be thrown from the lie on the ground, directly underneath the un-playable lie.

• After teeing off, the player whose disc is farthest from the hole always throws first. The player with the least amount of throws on the previous hole is the first to tee off on the next hole.

• Fairway throws must be made with the foot closest to the hole on the lie. The other foot may be no closer to the hole than the lie. A run-up and normal follow-through, after release, is allowed.

• A disc that comes to rest in the disc basket or chains constitutes successful completion of that hole.
