CHICKASHA — Chisholm Trail

Republican Women



Chisholm Trail Republican Women will meet Monday, July 19 at 7 p. m. at Canadian Valley Tech Center, 1401 Michigan Ave., in Chickasha.  Please use the east door entrance.  The meeting is open to Republican men and women and we encourage guests to attend.  Light refreshments will be served.

Guest Speaker will be Representative Phil Richardson.  He serves the people of House District 56, which includes the northeastern part of Grady County, and he has served since 2004.  He is the chairman of the House Committee on Wildlife and his legislation includes several House Bills.

Rep. Richardson is from the Pocasset-Minco area.  He is married to Janalee and they have been married for 37 years and have 3 children and 12 grandchildren.  Rep. Richardson is a veterinarian and a farmer.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970 as Captain and received the Bronze Star.  He graduated from Pocasset High School and received a BS Agriculture degree from OSU and a DVM from OSU.

Rep. Richardson is currently a deacon at Hazel Dell Baptist Church, is a member of Oklahoma Cattlemen's Assoc., Oklahoma Pork Council, Oklahoma Veterinarian Medical Assoc., Oklahoma State Alumni Board, Minco Lions Club, Pocasset Masonic Lodge, and Minco American Legion.

Kid’s Summer

Art Classes Scheduled

‘Exploring the Rain Forest Through Art’



Elizabeth Johnson, a local Chickasha artist and Chickasha Area Arts Council member, will teach a summer art class, Kid's Summer Art – Exploring Rain Forest Through Art, July 12-23.

The class is open to ages 5 to 9 and 10 and older.

Younger students will have experiences with Mixed Media 3-D Art, and the older ones will be drawing in Graphite, Charcoal and Colored Pencil.

Classes will meet daily, Monday through Friday. All classes will meet at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4th Street and Iowa Avenue in Chickasha.

Class space is limited. Deadline for enrollment is July 7.

An Art Show featuring the children’s ‘Rain Forest’ artistic creations will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. July 23 in the Life Center of Epworth UM Church. The public is invited to attend.

Children ages 5-9 will meet from 1 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. Those who are 10 and older will be in class from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The total fee for the 10 sessions is $110 for those ages 5 to 9 and $115 for ages 10 and older.

Supplies are included in the class fee.

Johnson has taught drawing and several other media for more than 10 years in Chickasha, Shawnee and Tulsa. She teaches drawing from a right brain perspective, which is an effective, quick and universally understandable way to learn how to draw. She has used this technique with hundreds of students and has yet to find anyone unable to understand and learn this method, she said.

Recovery Workshops



The July Traveling "Brown Bag" Recovery Workshops for July 2010 will be held:

• Friday, July 16, 6 p.m. at St. Luke's Church

• Saturday, July 23, 1:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Church

Please bring a pen or a pencil. Workshop materials will be provided.Coffee will be provided, or you may bring your own water, tea or soda to drink and something to eat if you'd like.

Alex School Reunion,

classes of 1957-61



Alex School graduating classes of 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961 will host a get-together on Friday, July 20, at the Best Western motel in Chickasha. Everyone is encouraged to convene around the motel's pool area in the afternoon to visit until the meal is served at 6 p.m.. Grady County Interagency and Community Coalition



The Grady County Interagency and Community Coalition meets on the third Wednesday of each month at CVTC from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. All residents, agencies and businesses in Grady County who are interested in the health and well-being of our area are invited to attend. Our next meeting is July 21. Kent Hibbard, of the Resurrection House, will make a presentation and the Washita Valley Community Action Council is scheduled to be our speaking agency. Caddo County Democrats host candidate forum



ANADARKO —There will be a candidate forum for Caddo County’s Democratic candidates at 7 p.m. July 22 at Anadarko City Hall, 501 W. Virginia.

Invited candidates include those running for the offices of Caddo County Treasurer, Caddo County Assessor, and District Commissioners #1 and #3.

The forum is sponsored by the Caddo County Democrats.

The forum is open for all Democratic candidates of Caddo County offices running in the July 27 primary.

The Caddo County Democrats are hosting this event to help voters become informed before they cast their votes.  All constituents of Caddo County are encouraged to attend.

Lions Club Golf Scramble Saturday August 7

The Chickasha Lions Club announces the Tenth Annual Lions Golf Scramble at the Riverbend Golf Course on Saturday August 7. Teams register at 8 a.m. and tee off shortly after. Cost for each two-member team is $130 or $65 per player. Lunch is provided after the tournament. Local businesses and individuals may sponsor a team for $100. Large advertising signs are placed strategically throughout the course for businesses and individuals who want to help sponsor the event.

Summer Fun Festival

Bridge Creek will play host it’s first Summer Fun Festival on Aug. 21. The Summer Fun Fest will start at 9 a.m. with a parade and will feature a homemade salsa contest, vendor booths, food booths, car show, Little Miss Bridge Creek Contest, entertainment, inflatables, a rock climbing wall and bunge jumping. Raffle tickets will be sold for an autographed pennant and fun pack of our 2010 Oklahoma City Thunder,  an autographed photo from the famous Harlem Globe Trotters,  NFL Buffalo Bills Fred Jackson autographed photo, Buffalo Bills Brian Moorman autographed photo and shirt among other items.   

Booth space is still available . Vendor Food Booths are $100, booths without electricity are $30 and  booths with electricity are $40.

Leadership Chickasha

Leadership Chickasha, an educational, issues-oriented community leadership program will be taking applications in August and accepting nominations for the class scheduled to begin in October 2010.  Applications will be available online or at the Chamber office in August.

Class size will be limited to 25.

Class participants will be exposed to the social and environmental complexities of the city, county and state.  In addition to

learning about the opportunities, needs and resources that exist in the Chickasha area, class members will also be trained

in a variety of lifelong skills such as Negotiation and Mediation; Public Speaking; Dealing with the Media; Business Eti-

quette; and Stress Management.   

This class will be the 12th group through the program since Leadership Chickasha graduated the first class in the 1980’s.  

Many of the Leadership Chickasha alumni have taken prominent roles in state and local  leadership.  Parties devote one Thursday per month for seven months for the interactive seminars that encompass the following:

• Understanding city, county and state government

• Communication skills  

• Public Speaking and Presentation Skills  

•  Dealing with Media

•  Stress Management    

•  Business etiquette

Tuition is $300 per person and payment arrangements can be made. Call the Chickasha Chamber for more information.



Main Street History Walk

The Main Street Association will present a History Walk from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.

Guided tours through a few of downtown Chickasha’s most historic buildings, including Washita Theatre, The Dixie, Petroleum Building, and the First National Bank. Ending with a reception at the Rock Island Depot.  

The tour will include live music in the pocket park and a stop at the Liberty Drug Store for a coke.  

Tickets will be free but required. Tickets will be available at the Chamber of Commerce, 221 Chickasha Ave. in August.
