Water, sanitation, sewage rates to rise

A meeting of the Chickasha City Council confirmed on March 28 that water, sanitation, and sewage rates will rise and that this increase will start during the May 2011 billing phase.

The rate increase will be approximately $2.40 for average, basic billing. The ordinance was passed 6 to 2.

Increased fees for sanitation services include residential refuse collection, multi-family dwelling sanitation, commercial refuse collection, and the collection of large/bulky items.

In response to concerns that larger refuse items might be abandoned in undesignated areas, Larry Shelton, Chickasha City Manager, said that large items will be picked up periodically if they meet a measurement of about 4 feet.

The water rate increase will include water supplied by the city water system and fire hydrant rates to be charged to consumers. The sewage rate increase will be charged to all consumers who discharge wastewater into the municipal system.

“None of us want to pay increased cost,” John Toland, Ward 4 City Councilman said, “but we want to continue to provide these services.”

In addition, an ordinance was approved for a zoning change request for the property located at 1501 South 4th St. to change from a C-1 (light commercial zoning district) to a C-2 (general commercial zoning district).

A memo from Shelton to the Mayor and Council states that the zoning change is for the purpose of selling or leasing the property. A C-2 zoning district typically generates traffic from both passenger vehicles and delivery trucks and requires direct and frequent access. The zoning change from C-1 to C-2 is consistent with the surrounding zoning districts, according to the memo.
