CHICKASHA —
A triad of new programs are coming to Chickasha to keep the city clean. New curbside poly carts, monthly bulky waste pick-up and a recycling rewards program will be implemented starting this September, according to Brenda Merchant, Waste Connections State Sales and Municipal Manager.
Chickasha residents can expect to receive two poly carts next week between Aug. 13-29, according to Steven Clark, District Manager of Waste Connections of Chickasha. The carts will come with an information packet which will include lots of information including new collection days and phone numbers to call if there are questions.
They will receive a blue one for garbage and a forest green poly cart with a beige lid for recycling. There will be a sticker on the top of the recycling poly cart that lists what can be recycled, Merchant said. There is also no need to sort the recyclable items or to remove lids or labels. While they items do not need to be washed, they should be reasonably clean, Merchant said.
The Recyclebank program will reward Chickasha residents for everyday green actions with deals and discounts, Merchant said. To participate in the points program and begin earning points for home recycling, residents must register for a free account at
www.Recyclebank.com and verify their home address. Residents will begin receiving their pin number to register in late August.
The items that can be used in the recycling poly carts include:
Paper: office paper, magazines, phone books,
Mixed paper: newspaper, junk mail, etc.
Cardboard: corrugated cardboard and boxboard
Metal cans: aluminum and steel
Glass: all glass bottles and jars
Plastics: Codes #1 through #7 (excluding plastic bags and wrap or film)
These programs will make an improvement on Chickasha's landscape.
“Our current recycling drop off dumpsters are used heavily,” said Stewart Fairburn, City Manager for Chickasha said in a release. “It is time for curbside recycling to replace citizens hauling their recycling materials to the drop off points. Another benefit is the additional materials that will be able to be recycled through this new program. Not only is it good to recycle, but the recycle bank makes it more fun by adding the competition of getting more points for more discounts” said Fairburn.
A kickoff for the program will take place at the Grady County Free Fair on Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will give Chickasha residents an opportunity to ask questions about the new system. Clark said that Waste Connections representatives will be there and willing to help.
"We want people to ask as many questions as possible," Clark said.
Because of safety, this program will not extend to apartments. The cluster of poly carts and high traffic of the parking areas makes the program impractical for apartment complexes, Clark said.
