Chickasha community grieves death of high school football player

CHICKASHA — OU Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City confirmed that Chickasha football player Kody Turner died Friday morning.

Out of respect for life and the family the football game with Noble ws cancelled, said Chickasha Public Schools Superintendent Jim Glaze.

CHS Principal Beth Edwards made the announcement of Turner's death to the student body Friday morning and let them know that counselors and volunteers were available for anyone who wanted to talk, Glaze said.

"We have our district counselors who are available and we also have volunteers from the community," Glaze said. He said the volunteers include local youth ministers.  

Hospital spokesperson Allen Poston said he could only confirm the death and could not release any further information.

"Because of the HIPAA laws, I can't say what time he died or what was the cause of death. I wouldn't be able to do that without written permission from the family," Poston said. "If any news stations are reporting a time of death, I do not know where they got it from. It did not come from me."

Turner, a Chickasha High School junior lineman, collapsed at practice Tuesday afternoon. CHS Head Football Coach Rick VanCleave said Turner apparently told a female trainer that he had been sick before practice but did not inform him.

"He was helped by coaches steadily to his feet and then collapsed again," Van Cleave said.

An ambulance was called and Turner was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, then transferred by medical helicopter to OU Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. His family released a statement Thursday saying that Turner remained in critical condition.

"This is the first heat stroke that I've had to deal with in 26 years. I've had to put guys in the shower after practice, but it's been a long time since I can recall having to call an ambulance," VanCleave said.
