The Chickasha Area Arts Council (CAAC) is pleased to invite the community to enjoy an evening of Poetry Reading as presented by Carol Hamilton, writer, storyteller and Poet Laureate of Oklahoma 1995-97.

The Poetry Reading event is Thurs., Sept. 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm at Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant in the Private Room, 3127 S. 4th Street, Chickasha, OK.

There will be an open mic available, so guests are encouraged to read one or two of their own poems or those of favorite poets.              

Carol Hamilton was born in Enid, OK and graduated from Midwest City High School. She has a BS degree from Phillips Univ. and an MA in English from UCO, Edmond. She taught elementary school students for several years, helped develop and taught for 12 years in the Mid-Del Schools’ elementary gifted school, was a teacher in the English Department at Rose State College for 10 years and was on the graduate faculty of the Creative Studies Division of the English Department at UCO for seven years.

She has also taught Spanish, astronomy, and creative writing in continuing education programs for Rose State College, Oasis, the Vo-Tech System, and other programs. She translates for an Oklahoma City health clinic for women and children and often goes as a translator for medical teams working in Third World countries. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Central Oklahoma for 2007.

Hamilton has received many awards and recognitions for her poetry and novels. Included among them are the ‘Oklahoma Book Award’ in 1992 for her selection of poetry, Once the Dust, the ‘Southwest Book Award’ in 1988 for her children’s novel, The Dawn Seekers, and the ‘Cherubim Award’ for her novel, The Mystery of Black Mesa. Some of her other published stories include Legends of Poland; Legerdemain; Deserts; Dry Places and Other Aridities; Daring the Wind; Breaking Bread; Breaking Silence; Gold: Greatest Hits; I, People of the Llano; and a new children's novel, I'm Not from Neptune, and Vanishing Point.  Her recent releases are Shots On (a finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award) and Contrapuntal, a love story about the lives of Clara and Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
