CHICKASHA —
A showing of whimsical metal work and jewelry is scheduled to be on display at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma during Helen’s Show Sept. 10-Oct 1.
The show will feature the work of USAO graduate Helen Shafer. The exhibition will be open daily during normal business hours in the Davis Hall Third Floor Art Gallery on the USAO campus. The show is free and open to the public. An opening reception is scheduled Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in the gallery.
“My work is designed based,” Shafer said. “The medium employed isn’t necessarily important. As long as the material can support the design, I will use it.
“I’ve used forks, buttons, linoleum, newspaper, grocery sacks and pocket change. I have even used precious metals and shadows to express various designs. It is fun!”
Shafer graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree this year. Before coming to USAO, she was a graduate of Putnam City High School.
She has participated in numerous shows at USAO that include Independent Study shows, spring shows, holiday shows and an Exhibition of Academic Review. Shafer also participated in the Young Artist Art Demo and Trashion Fashion Show at the Oklahoma City Arts Festival and Momentum Tulsa at the Living Arts Gallery.
Shafer works in stained glass, photography, small metallurgy, steal brazing, relief painting, intaglio printing, screen-printing, oil painting, acrylic painting, knitting and weaving. Her work is part of more than 10 private collections.
While at USAO, Shafer received the Derald Swineford Scholarship, the Louise Waldorf Scholarship, the Loucile Bennett Evans Scholarship and the Art Talent Plus Scholarship. She was a member of the USAO Art Club and the Zombie Survivalist Club.
