Simple procedure keeps bills at bay

WHO ARE THEY?

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry has proclaimed October as Weatherization Month and the Washita Valley Community Action Council’s Weatherization Assistance Program is providing assistance for low to moderate-income families.

According to Randy Brasee, weatherization director of WVCA, nationwide, low-income families spend 17 to 18 percent or more of their annual income for energy compared to five percent for other families.

To reduce energy usage, improve comfort and safety for low to moderate income families, the program offers home evaluations to determine which energy-saving practices are needed and then provides the necessary materials and manpower to improve the energy-efficiency of the home.

The year-round program is designed to reduce energy use which, in turn, saves money and increases personal comfort.

This year, the program has weatherized about 30 homes in the Grady-Caddo county area. Target clients are prioritized using a point system.
