After jmore than three hours of deliberation, a jury Tuesay evening found Terry Don Bumpus guilty of raping and maiming a 15-year-old Chickasha girl.
Bumpus received a 23 year sentence for his crimes, but he could have gotten life. He received 20 years for the rape and 3 years for the maiming.
Bumpus must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole in 2029.
On Sep. 23, 2008 the victim was walking home from the skate-park at Southwest Elementary School. She said Bumpus and his friend Matthew Lane pulled up behind her at the intersection of 16th and Arkansas in an orange pickup with black stripes.
She said she was scared, contemplating whether to run or scream but could muster the strength for neither. She said as she continued to walk away Bumpus came up behind her and shoved her to the ground. She then tried to crawl away, but Bumpus grabbed her ankle and pulled her towards him, she said.
She said he then pulled out a Zippo lighter and began rolling his ring through the flames. She said that after Bumpus heated the ring, he pressed it into her chest twice, then heated it again and burned her a third time.
After burning her, he pulled her pants off, unbuckled his own and raped her.
Bumpus's defense attorney, Stacy L. Smith, could not believe the verdict. He said that he was "devastated" by the decision, and that he could not believe a jury would convict a man based solely on witness testimony.
Smith tried to protect his client by portraying the victim as a trouble maker who skipped school and smoked marijuana. Even though she was not a gang member, he harped on the fact that many of her friends were members. Smith spent days trying to lessen the credibility of the victim, but the jury never believed it.
The victim's father said he would like to thank the district attorney's office, Detective Seth Thompson and the jury for bringing closure to his family and justice to Bumpus.
"It's going to be a process for my daughter to get over this, but we feel this is a starting point," he said.
Prosecutor Lesley March, was in court Wednesday and unavailable for comment.
