Jazz guitarist Allan Holdsworth comes to Chickasha Dec. 11
One of the 20th century's most prominent guitarists is stopping in Chickasha on Dec. 11 as part of his USA Tour.
Jazz guitar virtuoso Allan Holdsworth is scheduled to perform in Te Ata Memorial Auditorium on the USAO campus at 7:30 p.m. This will be Holdsworth’s first performance in Oklahoma.
Guitarist Clint Strong is scheduled to open for Holdsworth. Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door.
“Allan Holdsworth and Clint Strong are two of the finest musicians in America,” says legendary guitarist Joe Settlemires, who leads the USAO Showband. “We are delighted to welcome these two for their own show in Chickasha. I hope fans of their music will come and bring friends.”
Holdsworth is one of a handful of musicians who has consistently proven himself as an innovator in the worlds of rock and jazz music. Many of music's best-known instrumental masters cite Holdsworth as that rare and shining voice — a legendary player who continues to push the outer limits of instrumental technique and the electric guitar's range of tonal and textural possibilities.
Musician Magazine placed Holdsworth near the top of their “100 greatest guitarists of all time.” He is an inductee of Guitar Player Magazine's Hall of Fame and a five-time winner in their readers' poll.
Holdsworth has developed many different aspects of guitar technology including new “baritone” variations of the instrument, his own custom six-string designs, the invention of electronic components for the recording studio and exploring the possibilities of guitar-based synthesizer controllers.
The sounds of Django Reinhardt, Jimmy Rainey, Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, Eric Clapton and John Coltrane were among this English musician's early inspirations when he began to work professionally as a musician in his early 20s.
Holdsworth was born in England. His father, who was a pianist, taught him music. He didn't pick up the guitar until he was 17 years old, but learned the instrument quickly.
Holdsworth has played many different styles during the last four decades but is best known for his work in jazz fusion. He has released 10 studio albums and three live albums.
Before going solo in the 1980s, he was a member of several bands including Gong, Level 42, Soft Machine, 'Igginbottom's Wrench, Tempest, U.K., Gongzilla, Bruford and Soft Works.
His tour takes him to 12 states including this one performance in Oklahoma. Playing with Holdsworth is Chad Wacherman on the drums and Jimmy Johnson on the bass.
Opening for Holdsworth at USAO is Clint Strong. Strong is considered by many to be one of the best of a new generation of jazz guitarists. His improvisations pay tribute to jazz guitar and sax players of the past, but are filled with modern explorations.
Strong has performed and recorded with jazz and country artists including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Red Garland and fellow guitarists like Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis and Tal Farlow.

Duncan nips Chicks for straight-game win
Duncan got their eighth match win of the season Tuesday, beating Nancy Waters’ Lady Chicks in straight games at the Activity Center.
The Chicks looked like they had a little hangover from Monday night’s tough road loss at Tecumseh, coming out flat again and dropping their first two games by identical 25-17 scores.
They came out firing on all eight cylinders for game three, running out to a 15-9 lead on the strength of a 7-0 run with Shelby Crosley serving, but the Demons battled back to tie it late and the Chicks let it slip away, 25-21. -
