Trial docket loaded in January

Federico Zarate faces charges of kidnapping, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and numerous other offenses. His trial is only one of several that dots the Grady County Court docket in January.

In addition, this month's docket contains cases involving forcible oral sodomy and possession of child pornography, obstructing an officer, possession of controlled dangerous substances, and lewd and indecent acts to a child. Trials begin Jan. 25.

The case involving Zarate stems from June 12, 2008, when Grady County dispatch received a call reporting that a woman was being held at gun point against her will in a home on County Road 2920.

A friend of the accuser, Brandy Wildey, called deputies to inform them that her friend was being held by Zarate, according to the arrest affidavit.

Zarate was reported to have several weapons in the home and had threatened to kill anybody who attempted to rescue Wildey. Deputy Sean Knight called the home, and on the third try he reached Zarate.

He asked Zarate if WIldey was there and he said yes. Wildey was allowed to speak on the phone, but Knight said he believed she was lying and in fear for her safety.

Knight asked Zarate if he could come by the house to ensure that everybody was OK, and Zarate agreed. When deputies arrived, Wildey burst out the door in tears. She told deputies that Zarate held her at gun point with a silver revolver, which was later located in a crawl space.

Deputies believe Zarate attempted to hide the gun along with two loaded shotguns, a loaded 9mm semi-automatic and an unloaded .40-calibre pistol. During their search they also observed broken bottles and a state of disarray consistent with a struggle, they noted in reports.

Zarate was arrested and has been on a roller coaster ride since then. He was initially deported because he is not an American citizen. He returned to the states to plead his innocence but was almost immediately jailed again, said Ray Cantwell, a friend.

Cantwell said the charges are unfounded and Wildey is a con-woman that has ruined Zarate's life.

Wildey also was arrested at the time of the incident on an outstanding felony warrant out of Oklahoma City for uttering a forged instrument.

Kimberly Ann Bruce faces charges of child abuse and neglect, obstructing an officer, and public intoxication.

Bruce was confronted by Chickasha Police about 6:30 p.m. on May 15 in the 700 block of Michigan Avenue. According to police reports, Bruce was walking along the railroad tracks carrying her 5-month-old daughter in one arm. Officer Jamie Guinn approached Bruce and asked her what she was doing. Guinn noticed Bruce was fidgety, anxious, nervous and sweaty with a dry mouth and foam at the corners, all signs of methamphetamine use.

Reports show the arresting officer asked if Bruce was under the influence of meth, and Bruce took off running. Her baby bobbed and shook with Bruce as she ran. In fear for the baby's safety, Guinn chased down Bruce and "wrestled" the baby from her arms.

Police reports stated the baby was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital because she was bleeding from the stomach and had a scratch on her head.

Bruce was later arrested, and due to her level of intoxication she also was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to be cleared by doctors.

Also set to appear in front of a jury this month are:

• Jasper Welch – Charged with forcible oral sodomy and possession of child pornography.

• James Mahaffey – Charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm and kidnapping.

• Eric Chance Fulelr – Charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, attempting to elude, pornography and possession of controlled dangerous substance.

• Robert Lee Grimes Jr. – Charged with four counts of lewd and indecent acts to a child.
