Preliminary hearing date set in Wee Care case

CHICKASHA — A date has been set for the preliminary hearing in the trial of Kaitlyn Murphy, the Wee Care employee accused of breaking a toddler's arm.

Grady County Assistant District Attorney Leah Edwards said a date of Aug. 28 at 3:30 p.m. was set for the hearing.

A second complaint was also filed against Murphy after further investigation.

Edwards said in a November interview with The Express-Star that Murphy could face up to life in prison if convicted of abuse by a caretaker.

Chickasha Police Department released an affidavit detailing what WeeCare Director Mandi Woods witnessed regarding interaction between Murphy and Gunner McConnell - the child she is accused of abusing.

"Woods informed Officer Hobbs that Kaitlyn Murphy  is GBM's (McConnell's) teacher and that she had showed signs of frustration with the children over the past two days and that she (Woods) has been keeping an eye on her," the affidavit states.

The affidavit also states that Murphy told CPD during an interview that she was not sure how McConnell had been hurt, but that she may have been too rough with him while trying to get him to take a nap.

Murphy also stated in the interview that when she gets mad she will forget what happens and that she does have anger problems.

A civil case against Wee Care, First Assembly of God Church and Murphy has also been filed by McConnell's mother, Desira Gwin who is seeking compensation over $10,000.

Wee Care is a subsidiary of the First Assembly of God Church.
