Growin' up around Cement, Oklahoma with a Daddy like Louis Walker meant there was always some kind of work to be done. Seems like every time I turned around, we were diggin' a ditch to bury some kind of gas line, water line, sewer line, or some kind of line, and back then, we did it the old fashioned way; with a shovel. No ditch witch or some fancy mechanical gadget. Just plain old hard work with a long handled shovel.
I remember on one of these glorious occasions, I was diggin' in one location, and my Daddy in another. I wish I had watched him a little closer, but no, not me. I was already an expert with a shovel and I was going to do it MY WAY. So, furiously I went to diggin'. I wanted to get through in a hurry so I could go do something else important; like play my guitar or somethin'. Well, we both finished diggin' about the same time and we layed the line. But the job wasn't finished yet. Now we had to throw the dirt back in the ditch and cover it all up. hummmmmm.
In my great hurry, I had thrown dirt all over the place. Most of it was three to six feet away from my ditch. That's when I noticed that my Dad had all of his dirt piled right along side his portion of the ditch. It was only an inch or so from the ditch. I sure wish that I had noticed that earlier!! Needless to say, my Daddy covered up his section of the ditch before I was even half way done with mine. I'll never forget how he was smilin'; leanin' up against the handle of that shovel, and enjoyin' his RC cola and a Moon Pie!!! But I had the satisfaction of sayin',"I did it my way!!!" You know what?? It wasn't all that satisfyin'!!
Do you ever wonder how often our Heavenly Father looks down at us and smiles as we struggle along, bound and determined to do it our way? How much faster and easier, and how much more could we accomplish in life if we would just take the time and look at the example God has given us in His son Jesus Christ? The real question is not "What would Jesus Do?" The real question is what are you going to do. Are you going to take a look at the manual (the Bible) and see what Jesus is doing and then join him in HIS work, or are you simply going to do what you think is important and do it your way??? The Bible tells us in Proverbs that there are ways that seem right to a man, but they lead to destruction. It's your choice.
My prayer for you today is that you will recieve the revelation in your life that it is always best to do everything God's way. I pray that you will realize that true peace and joy does not come from " I did it my way". Most of all, I hope that you will come to know how much your Father Loves you and that you will let Jesus Christ be your way.
Have a blessed day -- and don't throw your dirt too far from the ditch.
