The design and color of the public art sculpture for the Downtown Depot area were approved by the City Council during Monday’s meeting. The council also approved a funding request of $5,000 for the project.
The project is a collaborative effort between the City of Chickasha, the Chickasha Area Arts Council and USAO, and was designed by a team led by Archie Held.
The main point of uncertainty was about the color and finish of the sculpture. In the end, the council approved the sculpture as designed by Held and his team, keeping the red color.
“[The Downtown Depot] is an area that is really going to change in the next three to five years and needs energy, which is why he chose this color,” said Julie Bohannon, president of the Chickasha Area Arts Council.
Held said the sculpture represents the moving forward of that area and Chickasha as a whole.
“It gives a sense of an emerging area, and represents growth taking flight,” Held said.
Mayor Henry Ross thanked Held for his work in Chickasha. Held has worked with USAO to produce art for Chickasha in the past.
“As such a renowned artist, you could’ve gone anywhere to work,” Ross said. “Thanks for taking a personal interest in the city of Chickasha.”

advocates speak
Several people in attendance spoke during the visitor presentation portion of the meeting on behalf of the Senior Nutrition Centers in Grady County, asking the city to consider supporting a 1/8 percent sales tax increase to fund the centers.
Liz Craig of Ninnekah urged the council to consider putting the tax on the agenda in the future.
“We’re all in this together,” Craig said to the council.
“What hurts one person hurts us all. Asking everyone to give a little is not too much.”
