CHICKASHA — Over the Labor Day weekend, I joined those that had no lake plans, at the movies.  I decided to catch two action flicks.  The Expendables with a long list of prime actors and Salt featuring Angelina Jolie.

The Expendables

Directed by Sylvester Stallone

A band of motorcycles rumble down a dimly lit city street with the buildings towering above.  They disappear into their hideaway.  Hostages held at gunpoint in a shadowy room by a group of soldiers in unfamiliar military uniforms…

Extremely devastating weapons, fast flying knives & intense fight scenes are all packed into this film along with a long list of ‘brand name’ actors. Barney Ross (Stallone), leads his motley crew of merciless mercenaries into a remote island in the gulf.  Mission: Take out the General of the local army.  Payout: $5 million.  However, Stallone’s character has an ulterior motive: Rescue the General’s daughter.

Brilliant details in the action sequences, very graphic with each bullet shot and each knife thrown, unique camera effects (there’s a surprising ‘twist’ that is a lot of fun!) and big guys with big guns.  The bits of comedy brought to life the camaraderie between the crew members.  I think this one will make a good movie for the guys.  Also, be ready for a great classic rock soundtrack.

Disappointments: The limited screen time of some of these A-list actors.

Cast: Sylvester Stallone,Jason Statham, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Eric Roberts, Arnold Scharzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis, Randy Couture

Runtime: 1hr 43 min

Rating: R

Classic films you might like: Die Hard, Terminator, Rambo

Salt

Directed by Phillip Noyce

Is Evelyn Salt the Russian agent that has been raised to kill the Russian President?  Or is she a loyal CIA officer sworn to protect and serve her country?  Is she the heroine or the rogue?

She runs. She goes from sensual blonde to raven black while in hiding . She leads law enforcement on an extremely destructive, high speed chase and kills several along the way.  Is she driven by fear or determination to finalize her task?

You won’t want to miss this great tension and action combo.  You get a little MacGyver, a little Mission Impossible with a bit of Tomb Raider. Jolie’s character is not the only one you have to pay attention to in this movie.  Just when you think you have made your decision on who’s in cahoots with her, you are spun around confused about what just happened.

I really had a good time with this one, lots of twists and uncertainties.  If you like to be kept on your toes, then don’t miss this intense, action packed night out.  Girls, you’ll enjoy this one, too.

Looks like a sequel could be coming…

Disappointments:  More hand-to-hand encounters

Cast: Angelina Jolie, Live Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Andre Braugher, Daniel Olbrychski

Runtime: 1hr 39min

Rating: PG-13

Classic films you might like: Mission Impossible, Tomb Raider
