Salvation Army offers meals to many

CHICKASHA – The totals are in: 9 days, 1,215 meals, 322 overnight stays, 100 cots, 1 location.

The Salvation Army’s temporary shelter at the Grady County Fairgrounds closed on Friday, but the caring and sharing isn’t over. Families in need can still find help at The Salvation Army Corps (TSA) building at 227 N. 4th. Next week, another 300 food boxes are coming to help families who lost food supplies during power outages. Interested families can call TSA at 224-5647.

“We’ve had a terrific response from the city and the county, the mayor and local officials,” said Lt. James Biddix, who leads the local TSA Corps. “We could never have handled crowds like that at our building, so it’s been a godsend to share resources here.”

Displaced families came to the shelter at night, between 10 and 70 individuals per night, Biddix said.

“With help from other units in Oklahoma City and Lawton, TSA also provided hundreds of meals in Cement and Cyril, where temporary shelters offered refuge.

It’s been a challenging but rewarding year for James and Teresa Biddix, who moved to Chickasha from South Carolina to lead this Corps during 2009.

“We are honored to serve the people of Chickasha, who obviously appreciate what we’re doing,” Biddix said. “It’s a great privilege to partner with communities who really care about others.”
