City will celebrate on council race

There will be only one race for City Council this spring, and with just two months to go David Thomas and Ryan Posey are preparing for a showdown.

While the two share similar ideas, their style and approach are much different.

Thomas, 61, served on the Chickasha City Council in the mid 1980's and said he will rest on past experience to help in making tough decsions.

However, Posey, 28, thinks that his youth and new ways of thinking are what Chickasha needs.

Posey said that he respects those that have held office, but feels that stagnation has taken root. He said a mixture of new ideas and old wisdom will provide the correct balance to drive Chickasha into a more stable future.

"We have not done a good job of creating jobs, and its highly competitive" he said.

Posey said that to establish growth he wants to revamp the city's information technology, providing the connection speed and amenities that attract larger businesses.

"It is a company's top 10 need," he said.

He also wants to better local healthcare and renew the 1/4 cent sales tax that will be closed next March.

Posey is the Vice President of Operations at Hermetic Switch. He and his wife Ashley have a 1-year-old son, Bennett.

Thomas' platform is similar to Posey's, but their processes are quite different.

Thomas said that his experience as a school board and City Council member will serve the public well. He has vast knowledge of the inner workings of the city and said now that he is retired he is ready to work for the people again.

"Rather than fuss about [problems], I decided to get in City Council and see if I can change it," Thomas said.

With plans to change things in economic development and beautification, Thomas feels that the city can bring in more jobs. He said that it will not take much to make Chickasha more competitive.

Thomas said that he has things he wants changed, but he is just one person. He is willing to work hand in hand with all parties to better the city.

"I hope to work in a positive way with everyone.

Thomas is a widower and has grown children. He said now is the right time for him to run for the council because he has the time to put in the necessary work.

Both candidates are looking for the same outcome, better quality of life and more jobs in Chickasha, but it is up to the voters to decide whether they want wisdom and experience or fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

The election will be Tuesday March 2, and the winner will take the oath of office on April 5.
