City reps. answer recyclable questions

CHICKASHA — While the polycart pickup date starts Sept. 1, the blue and green receptacles have been spotted on the curb on trash day. Perhaps Chickasha residents still have questions about the new polycart system.

Waste Connections representative, Brenda Merchant, State Sales and Municipal Manager, was at Chickasha City Hall on Wednesday evening, Aug. 29. Mayor Hank Ross and Stewart Fairburn, Chickasha City Manager and other city representatives were also there to help answer questions.

Merchant said that some landlords were concerned that they would be held responsible for the polycarts used on their properties. Merchant said that the residents, not the landlord, would be responsible for getting the polycarts to the curb on trash day. However, the landlord is still responsible for making sure trash is not piled up on the property or in alleyways.

Ross said that there were concerns from physically disabled residents who are not able to take the polycart to the curb. In these cases, the resident should call Waste Connections so that they can make arrangements with the disabled resident, he said. For example, they may pick up the polycart form the porch.

There are plans for the future, including a cardboard recycling pickup for businesses. Merchant said she spoke to local businesses, such as Ross Seed and Brandts, who told her that cardboard from packaging was the most thrown away material from their business.

Ross said that the recycling polycarts should reduce the amount of trash blowing around in alleys from animals tearing up garbage sacks. He said that there had been calls praising the execution of a recycling system for Chickasha.

"It's just the right thing to do," he said.
