Local library offers unique way of paying fines

CHICKASHA — If you have any outstanding library fines, consider the month of December your lucky month. For the 14th year, the Chickasha Public Library is hosting its annual 'Food for Fines' program. All the collected food will stay in the community, according to Library Director Catharine Cook.

"The food will be given to our local food panty," Cook said. "There is such a great need this year that I hope we can exceed our usual total of about 30 boxes."

The month-long program isn't just for library members and people with outstanding fines, Cook explained.

"Even if you do not owe a fine, please donate some food for the food pantry," Cook said.

Not only does Cook hope this event will feed a lot of needy Chickasha residents, she also hopes the library will see the return of several missing books.

"By not having to repurchase popular titles, the library can buy more new books," Cook said.

By donating a non-perishable food item, any library fine will be eliminated. However, if a book has been lost, the replacement cost of the book must be paid. Only the fine itself will be waived.

The Chickasha Library's 'Food for Fines' will run until Dec 31. Donations are accepted during normal library hours which are Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
