Piedmont pressure beats Lady Chicks in second half

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team lost its fourth-straight game Tuesday night at home against Piedmont, as it continues to struggle through its stretch of top-10 opponents.

The Lady Chicks lost 61-38 to the Lady Wildcats, and are now 4-6 on the season.

"We're a young team," Chickasha head coach Christy Edelen said. "Piedmont was in the state tournament last year, and they're rated No. 7. They've played a very tough schedule and have a very tough team. You can't let up against teams like that."

Piedmont, the No. 7 team in the state, is now 5-5, having played five games against top-five teams so far this year.

Kieley Clift was Chickasha's leading scorer with 12 points. Dominique Golightly scored 10, and Sierra Hamilton scored nine points in the game.

Piedmont was led by Hayden Priddy, who scored 16 points in the game and hit four 3-point shots.

"I thought we were attacking them hard," Edelen said. "[Priddy] came out of nowhere and just had the night of her life shooting the basketball."

Chickasha played to a 10-10 tie after one quarter. Piedmont had a 30-20 lead at halftime, but Chickasha played close in the third quarter, only getting out-scored 15-12.

"The third quarter has been our nemesis, and we made a run and got it down to six, then the wheels just fell off again," Edelen said.

A combination of turnovers by Chickasha and good shooting by Piedmont extended the lead out of the Lady Chicks' reach early in the fourth quarter.

Chickasha starting guard Alex Stewart went down less than a minute into the game with an apparent knee injury and did not return to the game.

In her absence, freshman guard Kelsi Gore and sophomore Jackie Ramos saw more minutes than normal.

"I thought our effort was good, but we just didn't adjust to them a little bit," Edelen said. "Alex getting hurt kind of messed with us a little bit, but we hung in there and came back."

Chickasha's next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight in the Chickasha Tournament against the 2-8 Duncan Lady Demons

"We've got to regroup, because we have three games in a row, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in our tournament, and we would like to have a chance to compete," Edelen said.

The first-round game could be somewhat of a break for the Lady Chicks, who have spent the last four games playing some of the best teams in class 4A and 5A.

"This level of competition we've been playing night in and night out for the past however many weeks has just been tough," Edelen said. "We just have to do a good job of keeping our girls' heads up and keeping them moving in the right direction."
