Coon named player of the week

CHICKASHA — After a strong performance at the plate in the three game series against Friends University, Jared Coon was named Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

Coon — the Drovers’ starting left fielder — batted .538 this weekend, hitting seven of his 13 at bats.

Of his seven hits, three were doubles, one was a triple and one was a home run. In game two of the series, Coon nearly hit for the cycle, missing only the single.

All in all, he scored six runs over the weekend and batted in another 10.

The Drovers (12-2) went on to win all three games of the series, which spanned Saturday and Sunday. They move on to play Bethany College at home in a three game series Feb. 23-24. First pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Coon leads the 2013 squad in batting average, runs, hits, doubles and RBI. Batting .393 on the season so far, he has scored 16 runs and batted in 20 runners.

Coon is the first USAO player to earn Player of the Week honors this semester. He was named Player of the Week twice last season.

He is a sociology senior from Dale, Okla., and is the son of Russ and Alana Coon.
