With all the struggles that led to Oklahoma State's road loss to Arizona, the play of true freshman quarterback Wes Lunt was not one of them. The true freshman from Rochester, Ill., got the seal of approval from the coaching staff in his first road contest - and really his first real game at the college level.
"He's played well. He's made some mistakes, but we're pleased with where he is at this point in his career," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "He needs to continue to improve. I don't know that we can ask much more from him in the positions that he's been in in the game on the road."
With the team trailing for much of the game, offensive coordinator Todd Monken said he was impressed with how Lunt handled the pressure of having throw to keep the Cowboys in the game.
"The training wheels came off the other night because we had to throw it. We tried not to throw it so much. We tried to run it, play action it, and keep things fairly simple," Monken said. "The good news is that he threw it for a living in high school so it's not like he is out of his element just dropping back and throwing."
Lunt set a Big 12 Conference passing record for a freshman, as well as a program record, with his 436 yards. But the fact that he had to throw so much is something Monken would prefer not relying on.
"If he breaks a bunch of records, that means we are in bad shape. We want to be able to run the ball and control the clock," Monken said. "It's not hard to see that he's got an unbelievable demeanor, a pocket presence and he is very accurate."
