A celebration of life party, (which is an Irish wake) will be held in her memory at the Grady County Fairgrounds community building on Saturday, Oct.  6, 2012, 4pm to 7pm.

Barbara was born in Oklahoma City, on Nov. 28, 1953 to parents Everett Buchanan and Shirley A. Cosgrove.

She passed away Oct. 1, 2012.

Married twice, William Gartrell and Michael Gillenwater, she mothered two children, Connie D. Gartrell and Jared J. Gillenwater.

In 1959 her parents moved up to Alaska where she began school; in 1962 they moved back to Oklahoma where she continued school in Nuyaka (a small community west of Okmulgee), Beggs and Okmulgee.

Barbara married Bill Gartrell her senior year of high school.

She had a love for reading, and for travel. She would constantly take her kids and her nieces, nephews, and any kids who were allowed to go with her. She traveled often in the early to mid-90s to California to visit family. In 1995 she went with her son, mother, one of her sisters and her children, to Disney World in Orlando. She also visited the Carlsbad Caverns, Grand Canyon, and went on a trip with USAO to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England, as well as other minor weekend trips.

Barbara worked for Delta Faucet Company as a quality assurance clerk for 28 years until the plant closed in 2006; she also went to college at OCCC in Oklahoma City and Moore Norman Technology Center to get her BS in “business technologies and database management”. She participated in Business Professionals of America (BPA) and took first in state in database management and 13th in nationals in New York City in 2007. After working many temporary positions, she finally found a job doing what she loved at Severn Trent environmental services in November 2010, where she worked until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2011.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father and twin brothers, Ronald and Donald Buchanan.

Survivors include her mother, Shirley A. Buchanan of Chickasha, son, Jared J. Gillenwater, of Chickasha, daughter, Connie D. Gartell, of Chickasha, two brothers, Darrell J. Buchanan and Everett R. Buchanan Jr., both of Chickasha, four sisters: Sharron K. Sursa of St. Joseph, MO., Cheryl A. Buchanan of Rush Springs, Vicki Lynn Kalkbrenner of Choctaw, and Pamela S. Walls of Wellston.

At Barbara’s request, instead of flowers was that donations be made in her name to mobile meals of Chickasha.

Cremation arrangements were under the care of Ferguson Funeral Home.

  • Theodore "Ted" A. Diaconoff

    Ted Diaconoff, age 84 of Chickasha, was born the son of Andre Diaconoff and Evelyn Hotson Diaconoff on Oct. 7, 1928, in Akron, Ohio. He died on May 19, 2013 in Chickasha.
    After receiving his masters degree, Ted continued his education and received his Phd at UCLA. He also attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City where he studied piano and composition and was a faculty assistant. He later held teaching positions at universities in Michigan, Kentucky, then at USAO in Chickasha where he was a professor of music.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty.
    Survivors include his brothers, Phillip Diaconoff of Livermore, Calif. and Peter Diaconoff of Santa Fe, NM.
    Arrangements for cremation are with the McRay Funeral Home. There will be no services.

  • Patsy McDonald Rhymes

    Patsy McDonald Rhymes, 62, of Chickasha, beloved wife of Danny Rhymes, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.  She will be greatly missed by a large and loving extended family and many friends.  Patsy was a devoted wife and mother and spent most of her time caring for her family. 
    She is survived by her husband Danny, her son Starling and his wife Connie, and grandchildren Rochelle and Michael.  Patsy was especially close to her niece Pam and also leaves behind her brothers Charles, Paige, and Roland along with her sisters Thelma and Jeana. 
    Graveside services were held in Hominy,  on Friday, May 17, 2013, at 2 p.m. and will be officiated by her longtime family minister, Rev. Leonard Lindsay.  Arrangements are being handled by Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Oklahoma.

    Private graveside services were held for Noyka Hadley, 67, of Chickasha, on Wednesday May 15, 2013 in the Fairlawn Cemetery.
    Noyka was born on February 10, 1946, in Houston, Texas. She died May 11, 2013, in Chickasha.
    Services were under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.

  • Lois Morris

    Funeral service for Lois Morris, 89, of Chickasha, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Chickasha.  Lois was born June 13, 1923, the daughter of Elva L. and Eva Opal (Heavin) Keeton.  She died May 13, 2013, in Muskogee.

    Graveside services for Betty Jo James, 84.will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013 in the Westview Cemetery in Rush Springs under the direction of Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Chapel in Rush Springs. Visitation will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Martin Funeral Home in Elk City and Wednesday and Thursday at Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Chapel in Rush Springs.
    Betty was born in Cox City,  on Thursday, Sept. 27, 1928 and passed from this life on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in Elk City.

  • Freida Perkins

    Funeral services for Freida Perkins, 95, of Chickasha,  will be 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in the Chapel of Sevier Funeral Home.
    Freida Perkins was born March 19, 1918, at Kalamazoo, Michigan.  She passed away at her home on Saturday, May 11, 2013.
    Mrs. Perkins married Daniel Perkins on November 14, 1940.  She and Daniel lived in New Mexico from 1940 to 1980, when they moved to the Amber area.
    She had worked in the New Mexico public school system and after moving to Amber she worked at the Amber Café for seven years.
    She is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Perkins in 1986 and a son, Danny Perkins in 2010.
    Mrs. Perkins is survived by a sister, Esther Healey, of PawPaw, Michigan; four grandchildren:  Penny Fuller, George Perkins, Wayne Perkins and T.J. Perkins; 11 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; Daughter-in-law:  Wynema Perkins. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Carla and Eddie.
    Interment will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Chickasha, OK under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
