Nina Faye Kilgore
Nov. 23, 1916 - Nov. 10, 2012
A funeral service for Nina Faye Kilgore, 95, will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 4th and Colorado.
Nina Faye was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1916, at her parents’ farm home near Hydro, to William Harrison and Stella Taylor Talkington, the youngest of their 10 children. She grew up in that same farm home, living there until moving into Hydro with her father as a young adult, after the death of her Mother. She died in Norman Saturday, Nov. 10, just two weeks shy of her 96th birthday.
She attended Hydro schools, graduating in 1934 from Hydro High School, after which she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education at Southwestern Teacher’s College (now Southwestern Oklahoma State University), Weatherford, in 1938. She went back to Hydro, where she taught grades 1-8 in a near-by one-room school house for several years then in Hydro Public Schools.
It was in those early teaching years that she met the young soldier from Minco, who became the love of her life for nearly 70 years. She and Elmer J. Kilgore were married on Aug. 5, 1945, in the same farm home where she was born, and soon after settled in Chickasha, where they were co-owners of the K & E Auto Supply in the downtown area for a short time. Together they reared four daughters, Stella Louise, Carolyn Gayle, Laura Faye, and Barbara Jean (Jeannie).
She took an active part in all her daughters activities, serving many years as a Girl Scout leader, and assisting in their school and church events. When her youngest daughter was born with a congenital defect that required long periods of hospitalization, she lovingly juggled life to care for her and assist in her treatments without neglecting the needs of her older children.
It was only after her daughters were nearing college that she earned her Master of Teaching degree in Special Education at Central Oklahoma State University, Edmond, and renewed her teaching career in the Chickasha Public Schools, where she taught Special Education for 12 years before retiring in 1978.
Nina and Elmer have been active members of First Baptist Church of Chickasha since the mid 1950’s. She taught babies and young children there, later becoming Preschool Director, teaching at least two generations of youngsters and helping nurture them, as she did her own children, in the love of Christ.
A prayer warrior throughout her life, Nina Faye taught her children to pray from the earliest years of their lives, served many years as a faithful part of the First Baptist prayer ministry team, and even continued to pray after dementia had claimed so much else from her and even in the last weeks of her life.
Nina Faye was preceded in death by her parents, all of her seven brothers and two sisters, and one great-grandson, Justin Daniel Rodriguez.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Elmer, of the home, and her four daughters Stella and husband Mike Rawlings of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Murdock of Shawnee, Laura and husband Jess Burton of Okmulgee, and Jeannie of Chickasha. Other survivors include her grandchildren Stephanie and husband Carlos Rodriguez of Wimberley, TX, Charlotte and husband Brayden Jones of Shawnee, Christopher Murdock of Norman, Richard and wife Pam Murdock of Splendora, TX, Kirby and wife Peggy Murdock of Porter,TX, Teila Rose Dye and Caleb Burton of Okmulgee, Karen Bailey of Broken Arrow, and Dave and wife Nicole Burton of Eufaula, and others.
Surviving great-grandchildren include Bradley, Spencer, Ashley and Tamara Rodriguez, Wimberley, TX; Dylan and Ethan West, Shawnee; Abby and Gunnar Jones, Shawnee; Christian and Zach Bailey, both of Broken Arrow; Landon Antoniono and Natalie Dye of Okmulgee, and numerous others.
Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
