Eleanor Elizabeth Edmondson

Memorial service for Eleanor Elizabeth Edmondson, age 92 of Chickasha will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Epworth United Methodist Church. Dr. Rockford Johnson will officiate. Viewing will be held at McRay Funeral Home on Monday and Tuesday. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Eleanor Elizabeth Edmondson was born the daughter of David Cyrus Bacon and Henrietta Clara Bausman Bacon on March 28, 1920 in Edwardsburg, Mich. She died on April 28, 2012 in Chickasha.
Eleanor was born and raised in Edwardsburg, Mich. She graduated from Western Michigan University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She did her post graduate work at U.C.L.A. and Western Michigan University. Eleanor then taught school for 10 years prior to her marriage to J.B. Edmondson Jr on February 15, 1953 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
She has been active with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Sorosis Club , PEO, and the League of Women Voters. She served for several years as president of the Friends of the Library in Chickasha and was also a member of their state board. She served with the Grady County Retired Educators and the Partners in Education and was a reading mentor at the Grand Elementary School. She served for many years on the local sales tax oversight committee for the Chickasha mayor and city manager, served as a docent with the Grady County Historical Society and as a member of the Grady Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was active with the Oklahoma Federation of Democratic Women and the Grady County Democratic Organization and was inducted into the Oklahoma Democratic Party Hall of Fame. Eleanor served for eight years on the board of the Southwest Youth and Family Services. She was also on the Board of Directors for Washita Valley Community Action Council (Head Start). She was recognized on several occasions for her volunteer work with the community. Eleanor was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and the Wedding Ring Sunday School Class, where she took an active role in visiting members who were homebound or in nursing homes. As busy as she was, she always took time to stop and encourage those around her. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Henrietta Bacon; her husband, JB Edmondson.
Survivors include her daughter: Margaret Fleming of Amarillo, Texas; granddaughter: Sarah Fleming of Quinlan, Texas; grandson: Clinton Fleming of Plano, Texas; sisters: Bernice Olthuis of Wyomissing, Penn. and Virginia Pardee of Elkart, Ind. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Evergreen Cemetery in Minco. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, Southwest Youth and Family Services or Washita Valley Community Action Council (Head Start). Services are under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
