RHS coach knows it’s a process

Tim Beard came home to Rush Springs knowing that it takes a while to rebuild a football program.

That’s why he didn’t panic after his Redskins dropped a 50-13 decision Friday to Apache in the season opener.

Last Friday, after all, represented a beginning, not an end. There’s more to do, improvements to make -- starting this week against Maysville.

Rush Springs (0-1) plays host to the Warriors (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Maysville is coming off of a 34-13 loss to Meeker in its season curtain-raiser.

“You could call it a rocky start,” Rush Springs first-year head coach Tim Beard said. “(Apache) was definitely a good team. They were so big and they wore us down. They were able to keep their linemen fresh and we weren’t.

“We did a bunch of good things, though.”

Maysville, though strong, might be a better matchup for the ‘Skins. The Warriors use a lot of one-back, shotgun sets on offense, which means they may not be as physical as Apache.

“We feel like we may match up better with them than we did Apache, because (Apache) pounds you every down. That’s not to take anything away from Maysville -- they’re solid again.”

Meanwhile, Beard & Co. will keep focus on the end, not the beginning.

“It’s tough,,” he said. “Our team is young. We’re going to make mistakes -- just not effort mistakes. If we do that, we’ll have chances.”
