Area softball starts this week
Even though school doesn’t start for another 10 days or so, area softball teams will get their seasons started this week.
Chickasha will host Verden at 6 p.m. Monday for a scrimmage, and then Ninnekah will travel to Sterling Tuesday morning for a 10 a.m. scrimmage.
On Friday the Lady Chicks will play host to Marlow and Bethel for a three-way scrimmage beginning at 11 a.m. to close out the week.
Next week things get busy, with Ninnekah at Elmore City on Monday at 5:30 p.m..
On Tuesday it all takes off. Am-Po travels to Geronimo for a three-way with their hosts and Fletcher starting at 4:30 p.m., and the Chicks host El Reno at 5 p.m..
In other games, Ninnekah hosts Bray-Doyle at 4:30 p.m., and the Chick middle-schoolers scrimmage at MacArthur at 4 p.m.

Verden upsets No. 9 Lookeba in home opener
VERDEN – First-year coach Cody McHugh’s Tigers celebrated their home opener at Roy Edwards Field Friday with a pair of wins, including one big upset. They rolled over Cyril 12-1 for a game one run-rule then fought back from a six-run deficit to upset ninth-ranked Lookeba-Sickles 13-8 in the nightcap.

No. 2 Weatherford gets by No. 3 Chicks
WEATHERFORD – Weatherford pitcher Dillon Overton’s “last lick” two-run double got the Eagles by Chickasha 4-3 in a big early season game Friday. The Chicks, ranked third in 5A, were in town for a “top-three” matchup with the second-ranked 4A Eagles and were totally handcuffed by Overton, who struck out 13 before being pulled after finishing the sixth with a 2- 0 lead.

Drovers take one from No. 3 Stars
CHICKASHA – The Drovers pulled out one victory against No. 3 Oklahoma City this weekend. After losing the first game at OCU, the Drovers started strong in the double header Saturday, winning the first 5-4 behind pitcher Nate Hammons.

Owls sweep Empire to go to 4-1
NINNEKAH – Tom Hurst’s Owls made it three wins in a row Thursday night at Gene McNatt Field with a double-header sweep of Empire.
Senior Dallas Williams struck out a dozen Bulldogs for a five-inning, no-hit 3-0 win in game one then freshman Derek Farley ended game two early with a two-run walk off single for an 11-1 run-rule.

Chickasha’s Hill named to All-State
Chickasha senior and 189 lb State Champion Colton Hill can add one final footnote to his high school wrestling resume – All-Stater.

LITTLE LEAGUE LAST SIGNUP
The final sign up for Chickasha Little League will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Mollett-Hunter, Fifth Street and Minnesota Avenue.

Chickasha seniors Diamon Heath and Paige Hightower were both named All-Suburban Conference Honorable Mentions for basketball at this week’s coaches meeting.
