OU hires Bedenbaugh as offensive line coach

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma announced the hiring of Bill Bedenbaugh as offensive line coach on Sunday. Bedenbaugh held the same job at West Virginia the past two seasons.

“We are excited to welcome Bill and his family to the University of Oklahoma,” OU coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “Bill is a passionate teacher and a demanding coach who I believe will make an immediate impact on our football team. His track record of developing physical and disciplined offensive linemen makes him an excellent fit for our program.”

Bedenbaugh will be entering his 18th season as a collegiate coach. The past two seasons at West Virginia, he helped the Mountaineers set single-season school records for total offense (6,526 yards in 2012) and passing (4,509 yards in 2011).

In 2012, West Virginia ranked No. 5 in pass efficiency (161.97), ninth in scoring (39.5 ppg) and 10th in total offense (502.0 ypg) and passing offense (330.2 ypg).

He has also been ranked among the nation’s best recruiters by 247Sports.com and Rivals.com.

“I have a great admiration for the championship tradition of Oklahoma football and can’t wait to get on the field with our student-athletes this spring,” Bedenbaugh said.

Prior to West Virginia, Bedenbaugh worked four seasons under OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops at Arizona. He served as co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach in 2010 and as running game coordinator/offensive line coach the previous three seasons.

A native of St. Charles, Ill., Bedenbaugh had a seven-year run, from 2000 to 2006 as an assistant to Mike Leach at Texas Tech. After three years as a grad assistant, he coached running backs for two seasons and the offensive line for two seasons.

There is a fine line between parenting and coaching. Sure, sometimes they end up crossing paths. I, for one, learned many life lessons in sports, and that's probably why I want to work in that area. But for the most part, they are separate, and it should stay that way.
