NINNEKAH – Am-Po scored eight runs in a long fifth-inning rally to get by scrappy Ninnekah for a 10-3 fast-pitch win Tuesday.
The Lady Panthers got off to a slow start and got themselves in some trouble early. Ninnekah senior Amber Chaney kept them off balance and off the board for the first three innings while her Owl teammates built her a 3-0 lead.
Shortstop Kelsey Grimmett’s double scored Chaney in the first inning then Ninnekah added two in the second on an error and an “out-for-run” tradeoff on second baseman Carmen Johnson’s ground ball.
Am-Po broke the ice in the top of the fourth on freshman left fielder Jamie Olson’s RBI single then kicked the door down in the fifth, sending up a dozen hitters and scoring eight runs on five hits and three Owl errors.
The bases stayed loaded through most of the inning as Ninnekah tried but couldn’t get the lead runner then third baseman Hunter Martin cleared them with a hard-hit double to left-center. Martin scored on the third error before Chaney got shortstop Nikki Sprowls swinging to end it.
A delayed double steal in the top of the sixth got Am-Po an insurance run when Olson scored easily on the front end. Pitcher Erica Wenzel got the Owls in order in both the home sixth and seventh for the 10-3 win.
Wenzel got the three-hit decision making Ninnekah hit her pitches and striking out three.
Amber improves to 14-8 and Ninnekah continues to struggle at 5-18. Both teams will be on the road on Thursday, with the Panthers at Riverside and the Owls at Maysville.
