Drovers sweep weekend action
The road was kind as both University of Science and Arts’ basketball teams rolled through their weekend games with a perfect record. The USAO women beat Midland Lutheran 92-67 and Dana College 77-72 in back to back days in Fremont, Neb., and the USAO men made a little bit of history with a 69-60 win at Southeastern Oklahoma.
The Drover women got the weekend started by turning a 46-41 halftime lead against MLC into a blow out. Reigning conference player of the week Charite Lewis poured in a game-high 28 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. For the second time in as many games, the Cushing junior hit 14 field goals – one shy of the school record. Lewis’ 20 rebounds was also one shy of the school record.
Debora Dourado was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and scored a career-high 17 points in 15 minutes of play. Eilyn Flores scored 12 points, and Ivaney Marquez finished with 10 points and eight assists in Friday’s win against the host team.
Saturday’s game saw the Drovers erase a 44-40 halftime deficit to win its third in a row 77-72 against Dana College. Juliana Leite led USAO with 17 points and two timely 3-pointers that gave the Drovers the second-half lead.
Marquez scored 14 points, and Lewis added 12 points. Flores scored six points, but her 13 rebounds helped the Drovers outrebound DC 49-31.
The USAO men were not only a part of history but also history makers in Saturday’s win in Durant. The Savage Storm opened the new Southeastern Arena only to have the Drovers collect the gym’s first shot, first made field goal and first win.
Tim Nelson scored the Arena’s first bucket with a layup 58 seconds into the game as the Drovers ran out to a huge lead against the NCAA Division II school. After losing its last three against SOSU dating back to 2006, the Drovers raced out to a 30-13 lead.
The Storm finished the first half on a 13-6 run to cut the Drovers’ halftime lead to 36-26. USAO’s lead was only 45-40 with 11:37 remaining, but five straight points from Nelson and Jorge Parra extended the lead to 50-40.
SOSU answered with an 8-1 run to cut the lead back to three points with 8:39 left. USAO took control with its own 8-0 run behind four free throws from Parra and Jamaal McCoy and two buckets from Rashaad Singleton.
Singleton led all scorers with 16 points. Eli Flores posted 13 points, and Parra finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The USAO men improved to 2-0 on the season while the women moved to 3-1. Both teams are in action Tuesday with the women playing at Tabor College at 6 p.m. The men host Langston at 8 p.m. inside the USAO Fieldhouse.
