Chicks put 2 in state powerlift meet

Chuck Larsen

Two Chickasha student-athletes have qualified for Saturday’s State Powerlifting Meet at McLoud High School.

Sophomore Braxton Turner finished fourth at Friday’s Anadarko Regional with a total of 1,250 pounds and junior Dakota Farrell received an at-large bid with his 1,050-pound total.

Turner played on the Fightin’ Chicks’ interior line this past fall. Farrell did not play football this year but will be returning to the team for his senior year.

Both compete in powerlifting at the 242 pound weight class.

Two other Fightin’ Chick players also competed at Regionals. Junior wide receiver and defensive back Zach Funderburk finished eleventh at 157 pounds and junior wide receiver and defensive back Devrick Gray had to withdraw at 123 pounds after aggravating a recent knee injury.

Many football players state-wide compete in powerlifting over the winter. It combines three individual events, including the squat, bench press and the dead lift.

and standings are determined by the maximum combined weight lifted cleanly by the competitors.
