CHICKASHA —
Kyle Self and Gage Wimer will be teammates next season after signing to play football for first-year program Oklahoma Baptist, while Zach Hill signed with Central Oklahoma on Wednesday morning.
The Blanchard High School trio helped lead their team to the class 3A state championship this season, gaining attention from state and regional colleges along the way.
Hill said he chose UCO partially because they had recruited him from the beginning of his senior season.
"They're the only ones that recruited me all year, from last spring all the way through," Hill said. "ECU came in at the end, but UCO's been there all year."
Hill said the coaches told him he will play receiver his freshman year, and possibly move to tight end in the future.
Wimer and Self both got in touch with Oklahoma Baptist through football camps, although they made their decision to attend the school independently.
"A benefit was rooming together, but it also worked out individually," Wimer said. "It was close to home. But we did talk about going up there, getting to play and be teammates."
Self got in touch with OBU through a camp at Newcastle, and said the school began to show interest leading up to the state championship game.
"After the state game, I went and visited, and it was a good fit, a good school," Self said.
OBU is new to football, which is something Wimer said he found appealing.
"I just thought it would be cool to be the first class," Wimer said.
Wimer will play defensive end, and Self will play safety.
Blanchard head coach Jeff Craig said that some of his other players could possibly sign with schools after the first wave of signings, depending on how everything plays out.
Lady Chicks have two signees
With Chickasha High School soccer scrimmages about one week away, the Lady Chicks had two players sign letters of intent to play at in-state colleges Wednesday.
Kelsey Taylor signed to play with Oklahoma Christian.
Taylor said she had been in contact with the school since her sophomore year, and interest just built from there.
Her parents are alumni of the school, so Taylor said she is already very familiar with it.
Later in the day, Hannah Elrod signed on to play soccer for Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Elrod began communicating with SWOSU during the summer before her junior year.
She visited the school that same summer.
"I really liked the school," Elrod said. "I didn't want to go to that big of a school. I liked the size of it.
"I loved the soccer coach and how he coaches, so I thought it was a good match," she said.
Elrod said she has had discussion with her future coach about what her role will be, and that she will likely play a center or mid position.
She said it was a relief to get the signing done.
"It makes it more real for me," Elrod said.
